Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Sets DTC P1860

Symptom

The CHECK ENGINE and CHECK TRANS lights are on, or the customer reports they were on.

PROBABLE CAUSE

An open circuit or a poor ground in the torque converter clutch (TCC) solenoid causes the powertrain control module (PCM) to set circuit diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1860.

DIAGNOSIS

Connect the PGM Tester to the vehicle's data link connector (DLC), and look for engine and transmission DTCs in the Tester's freeze frame, the failure record, and the DTC menus.

^ If P1860 is the only DTC you find, go to CORRECTIVE ACTION.

^ If you find other DTCs, look them up on pages 6E-115 thru 6E-118 of the 1996 SLX Fuel and Emissions Manual. (If the DTC description says "Refer to 4L30-E Automatic Transmission Diagnosis," use pages 7A-62 and 7A-63 of the 1996 SLX Service Manual.) After you correct the other DTCs, go to CORRECTIVE ACTION to fix P1860.

^ If you do not find any DTCs, refer to page 6E-25 and page 6E-481 of the 1996 SLX Fuel and Emissions Manual for STRATEGY-BASED DIAGNOSTICS and SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS.
