4WD Indicator Always On
SYMPTOM
The 4WD indicator remains on when driving in 2WD mode.
PROBABLE CAUSE
One or both of the vacuum solenoid valves has open coil windings.
DIAGNOSIS
1. Make sure the vehicle is in 2WD mode. Drive it forward at least 100 yards, then brake to a stop.
^ If the 4WD indicator is on, continue to step 2.
^ If the 4WD indicator is not on, the Shift-On-The-Fly system is working properly. Investigate other causes of the customer's complaint.
2. Remove the skid plate from the Shift-On-The-Fly system.
3. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the vacuum solenoid valves.
4. Measure the resistance across the terminals on each vacuum solenoid valve.
^ If the measured resistance of either valve is greater than 50 ohms, continue to CORRECTIVE ACTION.
^ If both solenoids measure less than 50 ohms, refer to page 36 of the 1996 SLX ETM. Check for a short to ground between the 4WD indicator and the front axle switch.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the vacuum solenoid valve assembly. Pack the vacuum solenoid valve connectors with lithium dielectric grease.
1. Note the routing and positions of the hoses on the vacuum solenoid valves (three per valve). The hoses with a blue marking connect to the blue solenoid valve, and the hoses with a gray marking connect to the gray solenoid valve. Verify the connections with the illustration. Then disconnect the hoses.
2. Remove the vacuum solenoid valve assembly from the axle (one bolt).
3. Put lithium dielectric grease (see REQUIRED MATERIALS) in the electrical terminal cavities of the new solenoid valve assembly. Fill each terminal cavity halfway.
4. Install the vacuum solenoid valve assembly on the axle with the original nuts.
5. Reconnect the vacuum hoses.
6. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the solenoid valves.
7. Install the skid plate.
