Transfer Case: Description and Operation

A transfer case is used when it is necessary to direct power to both front and rear axles. Transfer case units may also provide a means of disconnecting one driven axle for economy and can be used to supply additional gear reduction for adverse driving conditions. Transfer case units may contain a differential unit to aid in power distribution between the driven axles.
