^ If the code you retrieve is not listed, the PCM has already been recalibrated and the repair has been completed. Use the appropriate SLX Service Manual, the ETM, and the PGM Tester, to diagnose other possible causes for the problem.
^ If the code you retrieve is listed, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Write down your customer's radio station presets and mode settings (treble, bass, balance, and fader).
2. Note the reading on the fuel gauge, then disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
3. Remove the fuel fill cap.
NOTE:
Wear proper eye protection through step 8 of this procedure.
4. If the fuel tank is more than 1/2 full, drain or siphon the fuel into a suitable container, then tighten the drain plug to 20 Nm (14 lb-ft).
5. Raise the vehicle on a lift.
6. Use brake cleaner and compressed air to thoroughly clean the area around the fuel sending unit.
7. Remove the sending unit from the tank. Make sure you cover the tank opening to prevent any dust or dirt from getting inside. Discard the sending unit.
8. Install the new sending unit.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Refill the tank with the fuel you drained, and reinstall the fuel fill cap.
11. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
12. Enter your customer's radio station presets and mode settings. Reset the clock.
13. Use the Smart Cable to update the PCM software (see Service Bulletin 99-019, Updating the SLX PCM, filed under Tools).
14. Use the PGM Tester with S/N 011 or later software to clear any remaining DTCs.
15. Recheck the broadcast code with the PGM Tester. The code must not match any of the codes listed.
