Keyless Entry: Description and Operation

Security Alarm System

The security alarm system is armed automatically after the doors, hood and tailgate are closed and locked. The security indicator on the driver's door panel flashes after the system is armed.
The system is set off when any of these things occur:
- A door is forced open
- A door is unlocked without using the key or the transmitter
- The hood is opened
- Radio or navigation display unit disconnected
- Tailgate opened without using the transmitter
When the system is set off, the alarm (horns) sound and the exterior lights (headlights, side marker lights, parking lights, and taillights) flash for about 2 minutes or until the system is disarmed by unlocking either door with the key or the transmitter.
For the system to arm, the ignition switch must be off and the key removed. Then, the keyless entry/security alarm control unit must receive signals that the doors, hood and tailgate are closed and locked. When everything is closed and locked, none of the control unit inputs are grounded except for the driver's door lock knob switch and the radio. When everything is closed and locked, control unit inputs have about 10 V reference, except radio and navigation display unit which should be 0 V.
The door switches, hood switch, tailgate latch switch, door lock knob switches, and door lock key cylinder switch are all open. Ten seconds after the doors are locked with the key or the lock knob, or immediately after locking the doors with the remote transmitter, the system arms.
If anything is opened or improperly unlocked after the system is armed, the control unit input voltage drops, and the system is set off. If the radio or navigation display are disconnected, the control unit input goes to 10 V, and the system is set off.
If one of the switches is misadjusted or there is a short in the system, the system will not arm. As long as the control unit continues to get a ground signal from the switch, it thinks the vehicle is not closed and locked and will not arm. If the Security Alarm System will not arm, see multiplex mode and input tests.
An alarm that sounds for no apparent reason may have been set off by a switch that is on the threshold of misadjustment. In this case, it may only take a significant change in outside temperature, the vibration of a passing truck, or someone bumping into the vehicle to make the alarm sound. If the security alarm sounds for 2 minutes and resets automatically, there has been a security input violation. If the security alarm sounds for 30 seconds and resets automatically, the PANIC mode has been activated.

Panic Mode

The panic mode allows the security system to be set off by the remote transmitter to attract attention. When you push and hold the PANIC button for about 2 seconds, the alarm will sound and the exterior lights will flash for about 30 seconds.
To immediately cancel the panic mode, press any button on the remote transmitter, or turn the ignition switch ON (II). The panic mode will not function if the key is in the ON (II) position.

Keyless Entry System
The security alarm system receives lock (arm), unlock (disarm) and panic signals from the keyless entry control unit. The keyless entry system allows you to lock and unlock the vehicle with the remote transmitter. When you push the LOCK button, all doors lock. When you push the UNLOCK button once, only the driver's door unlocks. The passenger's doors and tailgate will unlock when you push the button a second time.
The ceiling light, if its switch is in the center position, will come on when you press the UNLOCK button. If you do not open a door, the light will go off in about 30 seconds, the doors will automatically relock, and the security system will rearm. If you relock the doors with the remote transmitter within 30 seconds, the light will go off immediately.
You cannot lock the doors with the remote transmitter if a door is not fully closed, or if the key is in the ignition switch. If the hood or tailgate are not closed, the doors will lock and unlock, but the security system will not be armed until the hood and tailgate are closed.
The system will signal you when the doors lock and unlock by flashing the parking lights, side marker lights, and taillights: once when they lock, and twice when they unlock. If the light don't flash, make sure the doors, the hood, and the tailgate are closed and locked. Check that the security indicator blinks. If the security alarm system does not arm, refer to the multiplex mode or security input tests.

Touring model only:
Recalling a Memorized Driving Position
The transmitter has a function to recall a memorized driving position. There are two kinds of transmitters. One function is for the driving position memory switch 1, the other is for driving position memory switch 2.When the driver's door is opened after unlocking the door, the beeper sounds once, and the driver's seat and mirror move to the memorized driving position. When the movement is complete, the beeper sounds twice. If the position is already proper, the beeper sounds three times when the door is opened. The instructions for turning ON and OFF this feature are on the back of the keyless transmitter or.
