How to Check for DTCs - Service Check Signal Method





When the PCM senses an abnormality in the input or output systems, the [D5] indicator in the gauge assembly will usually blink and/or the MIL may come on. When the 16P Data Link Connector (DLC) (located behind the driver's dashboard lower cover) is connected to the Honda PGM Tester, the [D5] indicator will blink the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) when the ignition switch is turned ON (II).
When the [D5] indicator has been reported on, connect the Honda PGM Tester to the DLC (16P). Turn the ignition switch ON (II), select Honda Systems, and then the SCS mode, then observe the [D5] indicator.
If a PGM Tester is not available, jump DLC terminal 1 (BRN) to terminal 12 (BLK), then turn the ignition switch ON (II) and observe the [D5] indicator.





Codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks. Code 10 and above are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blink equals 10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the code. After determining the code, refer to the DTC Troubleshooting Index.
If the [D5] indicator or the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) has been reported on, or if a driveability problem is suspected, follow this procedure:
1. Record all fuel and emissions DTCs, A/T DTCs, and freeze data.
2. If there is a fuel and emissions DTC, first check the fuel and emissions system as indicated by the DTC (except for DTC 70). DTC 70 means there is one or more A/T DTC, and no problems were detected in the fuel and emissions circuit of the PCM.
3. Get the customer's radio and navigation system anti-theft codes, and write down the radio station presets.
4. Reset the memory by removing the BACK UP fuse in the passenger's under-dash fuse/relay box for more than 10 seconds.
5. Drive the vehicle for several minutes under the same conditions as those indicated by the freeze data, and then recheck for DTCs. If the A/T DTC returns, go to the DTC Troubleshooting Index. If the DTC does not return, there was an intermittent problem within the circuit. Make sure all pins and terminals in the circuit are tight, then go to step 6.
6. Enter the radio and navigation system codes, reset the preset stations, and set the clock.

How to Troubleshoot Circuits at the PCM

Backprobe set 07SAZ-001000A (Two required)

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS components locations, and the precautions and procedures in the SRS section before performing repairs or service.
1. Remove both sides of the center console lower panel.
2. Remove the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) module and the PCM.
3. Inspect the circuit on the PCM, according to the DTC troubleshooting, with the special tools and digital multimeter.





4. Connect the backprobe adapters (A) to the stacking patch cords (B), and connect the cords to a multimeter (C).
5. Using the wire insulation as a guide for the contoured tip of the backprobe adapter, gently slide the tip into the connector from the wire side until it comes in contact with the terminal end of the wire.

NOTE: Failure to use the appropriate backprobe tools can cause connector and/or terminal damage.
