REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Before replacing the SRS unit, check the battery/system voltage, and make any needed repairs.

2. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and navigation system. Write down the customer's radio presets.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least 3 minutes.

4. Disconnect the driver's and front passenger's airbag connectors (see page 23-23 of the 2001-02 MDX Service Manual).

5. Disconnect the side airbag connectors (see page 23-23).

6. Remove the lower B-pillar trim panels (see page 20-55).

7. Disconnect both seat belt tensioner connectors (see page 23-23).

8. Remove the center console side trim on both sides (see step 3 on page 20-66).

9. Pull the carpet down and away from the SRS control unit. Disconnect the connectors, and remove the Torx bolts from both sides of the SRS control unit. Then pull out the SRS control unit.

10. Install the new SRS control unit. Install the new Torx bolts supplied with the control unit, and torque them to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft). When you tighten the Torx bolts; be careful not to cross-thread them so their heads rest squarely on the SRS unit brackets.

11. Push the connectors into position until they click into place.

12. Reinstall the center console side trim.

13. Reconnect the driver's and passenger's airbag connectors.

14. Reconnect the side airbag connectors.

15. Reconnect both seat belt tensioner connectors.

16. Reinstall the lower B-pillar trim panels.

17. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

18. Initialize the OPDS.

^ If you have an Autoprobe, go to the procedure below, "Initializing the OPDS With the PGM Tester and the Autoprobe."

^ If you do not have an Autoprobe, go to the procedure below, "Initializing the OPDS With the PGM Tester and the SCS Service Connector."

Initializing the OPDS With the PGM Tester and the Autoprobe

1. Adjust the front passenger's seat-back to a normal upright position, and remove anything that is on or near the seat.

2. Start the engine, and turn on the A/C. Close the doors and windows, and run the A/C in Recirculation mode for 30 minutes. This will dry out any moisture that may be in the front passenger's seat.

3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

4. Connect the PGM Tester to the 16P data link connector (DLC).

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and enter the VIN into the PGM Tester.

6. Follow the screen prompts on the PGM Tester to get to the SYSTEM SELECT screen. From that screen, select SRS.

7. From the SRS screen, select MISC TESTS.

8. From the MISC TESTS screen, select OPD SYSTEM INIT.

9. Follow the remaining screen prompts to complete the OPDS initialization. If the initialization fails, repeat the process two more times. If the initialization fails again, check for set SRS DTCs, and troubleshoot according to the 2001-02 MDX Service Manual.

10. Do the idle learn procedure:

^ Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are turned off, then start the engine.

^ Let the engine reach its normal operating temperature (the cooling fan cycles twice).

^ Let the engine idle (throttle fully closed and with all electrical items turned off) for 10 minutes.

11. Enter the anti-theft code for the radio and for the navigation system (if equipped). Enter your customer's radio station presets. Set the clock.

12. Confirm proper system operation by turning the ignition switch ON (II) and noting that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

Initializing the OPDS With the PGM Tester and the SCS Service Connector

Leave the ignition switch in LOCK (0).

^ From the PROGRAM MENU, select 1: HONDA SYSTEMS.

^ Follow the prompts. When the PROGRAM MENU appears again, select 2: SCS.

^ From the SERVICE CHECK SIGNAL screen. you see the message "If the SCS line is in 16P DLC, the line will be grounded." Press the YES key on the keypad to the query "Will you continue?"

^ When you see the message "The SCS line in the 16P DLC has been grounded," do not press the EXIT key. Doing so would take you out of the SCS mode, and stop OPDS initialization.

^ Set the PGM Tester aside.

5. Plug the SCS service connector into the 2P memory erase signal (MES) connector, as shown. Do not use a jumper wire.

6. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

7. Watch the SRS indicator. It comes on for about 6 seconds and goes off. Unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds after the indicator goes off.

8. When the SRS indicator comes on again, plug the SCS service connector into the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds after the indicator comes on.

9. When the SRS indicator goes off, unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds.

10. Watch the SRS indicator:

^ If the indicator blinks twice and then goes off, the OPDS is initialized. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and disconnect the PGM Tester. Go to step 19.

^ If the indicator blinks twice and then stays on, the OPDS is initialized, but the SRS DTCs need to be cleared. Go to step 11.

^ If the indicator stays on without first blinking, the OPDS is not initialized. Repeat steps 3 thru 10.

11. Turn the ignition switch to Lock (0), and disconnect the PGM Tester.

12. Plug the SCS service connector into the 2P MES connector. Do not use a jumper wire.

13. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

14. Watch the SRS indicator. It comes on for about 6 seconds and goes off. Unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds after the indicator goes off.

15. When the SRS indicator comes on again, plug the SCS service connector into the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds after the indicator comes on.

16. When the SRS indicator goes off, unplug the SCS service connector from the 2P MES connector within 4 seconds. The SRS indicator blinks twice to indicate that the memory has been cleared.

17. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and wait for 10 seconds.

18. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). The SRS is OK if the SRS indicator comes on for 6 seconds and then goes off. If the initialization fails, repeat the process two more times. If the initialization fails again, check for set SRS DTCs, and troubleshoot in accordance with the appropriate S/M.

20. Enter the anti-theft code for the radio and for the navigation system (if equipped). Enter your customer's radio station presets. Set the clock.

21. Confirm proper system operation by turning the ignition switch ON (II) and noting that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.
