Audio System - Subwoofer Rattling Noise

Rattle From the Subwoofer

SYMPTOM
The subwoofer rattles when playing the audio system at moderate to heavy bass levels.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The rear washer hose routed around the subwoofer fits loosely in its mounting clips and makes noise from the subwoofer vibrations.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
To prevent vibration, apply cushion tape to the rear washer hose, the mounting clips, and the taillight harness above the subwoofer.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system (if equipped), and then write down the customer's preset radio stations.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes.
NOTE:
SRS components are located in this area.
Review the SRS component locations, and the SRS precautions and procedures before performing repairs or service.
3. Remove the interior right rear side lower area trim:
^ Refer to page 20-61 of the 2003-04 MDX Service Manual.
^ In ISIS, enter keyword INTERIOR TRIM, and select Interior Trim Removal/Installation - Rear Side Lower Area from the list.
4. Apply four 50 x 100 mm cushion tapes to cover the washer hose clips. To create an effective tension, stretch the cushion tape cushion over the hose clip, as shown.
5. Cut one of the 50 x 100 mm cushion tapes in half to make two 50 x 50 mm cushion tapes.
6. Stretch and apply the two 50 x 50 mm cushion tapes over the washer hose, as shown.
7. Remove the subwoofer to gain access to the taillight harness that is positioned behind the sheet metal and above the subwoofer.
*8. Install one 50 x 100 mm cushion tape on the taillight harness, as shown.*
9. Reinstall the subwoofer.
10. Reinstall the interior right rear side lower area trim.
11. Do the idle learn procedure:
^ Make sure all electrical items (A/C, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
^ Start the engine, and let it warm up to its normal operating temperature (the cooling fans cycle twice).
^ Let the engine idle (throttle fully closed and all electrical items off) for 10 minutes.
12. Initialize the driver's window auto-up feature:
^ Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
^ Make sure the driver's window is fully closed.
^ Push down and hold the window switch until the window goes all the way down.
^ Pull back and hold the window switch until the window goes all the way up, then hold the switch for at least 2 more seconds.
13. Enter the anti-theft code, the customer's radio station presets, and the navigation code (if equipped).
14. Test for rattling from the subwoofer with the audio system set to moderate or heavy bass levels.
