Navigation System "Talk" Button Doesn't Work

SYMPTOM

If the client backs up while the system is booting, and then drives forward, the navigation system voice "Talk" button may not work. Also, the audio system may not be muted when the "Talk" button is depressed.

PROBABLE CAUSE

A problem in the navigation software.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

^ Eject and identify the version number of the client's current orange labeled Navigation DVD-ROM.

^ Install the appropriate patch CD to temporarily resolve the issue.

^ To permanently resolve the issue, order and arrange installation of either the 3.20D or 3.30H replacement Navigation DVD-ROM.

NOTE:
Installation of the patch CD, although a temporary repair, is intended to create greater customer satisfaction during the client's first visit. Since this temporary repair will be lost if the battery is disconnected, the replacement DVD-ROM should be ordered at this time.

PARTS INFORMATION

Each dealer was sent these two patch CDs. If you need a replacement patch CD, call the Navigation Fulfillment Order Desk, and ask for the appropriate navigation patch CD:

^ 3.20D Patch

^ 3.30H Patch

NOTE:
Use only an orange labeled patch CD. Using any other CD will cause other problems with the navigation system.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Slide the front passenger's seat rearward.

2. Start the engine.

3. Open the front cover of the navigation unit, and eject the client's orange labeled Navigation DVD-ROM.

4. Write the version number of the CD on the repair order.

5. Match the version number on the DVD label to the appropriate patch CD listed in the table.

6. Insert the patch CD (with the writing side up), then close the front cover.

^ The navigation screen may go black for several seconds.

^ The screen then displays an Updating Software load progress bar.

^ After the download process is complete, the navigation system automatically restarts and displays a database error (which is normal).

7. Eject the patch CD; return it and the installation instructions to the jewel case, and retain it for repairing the next vehicle.

8. Reinsert the client's orange DVD-ROM into the navigation unit, and allow the system to reboot.

9. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), wait 30 seconds, then restart the engine.

10. Verify that the navigation system works properly by test-driving the vehicle on a mapped road until the road name appears at the bottom of the screen. The system is now "map matched."

NOTE:

^ If the battery is disconnected after installing the patch CD, the patch CD must be reinstalled.

^ Do not enter a route until the system is "map matched."

11. Determine whether the replacement DVD-ROM will be installed by the client or the dealer, then have your Parts Manager call the Navigation Order desk, and order a replacement DVD-ROM with the same version number as the patch CD used.

Be prepared to supply this information:

^ Service bulletin number and title

^ Vehicle's VIN

^ Client's current DVD-ROM version number

^ Client's mailing address (or the dealer's mailing address if the client feels uncomfortable installing the replacement DVD-ROM)

12. Install the replacement DVD-ROM:

A. Dealer installation:

^ Refer to page 22-568, DVD-ROM replacement, in the 2003-2005 MDX Service Manual, or

^ Online, enter keyword DVD-ROM, and select
Navigation Unit DVD-ROM Replacement
(With Navigation System) from the list.

B. Client installation:

Advise your Client to refer to the "Changing the DVD" section of their MDX Navigation System owner's manual.

NOTE:

^ Neither the replacement DVD-ROMs nor the patch CDs update the database or map coverage area.

^ The patch CDs and replacement DVDs are not interchangeable; using the wrong patch CD may cause additional problems.

^ For the newest city coverage information and navigation DVD-ROMs, refer to the Acura web site or call the Navigation Fulfillment Order Desk. (The client is responsible for the cost of these DVD-ROMs.)
