Body - Front Door Outer Handles Stick In Extreme Cold

Front Door Outer Handle Binds or Sticks When Cold

SYMPTOM

In cold weather, one or both of the front door outer handles stick open.

NOTE:
If the handle sticks in hot weather, this bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal troubleshooting.

PROBABLE CAUSE

Close tolerances in the door outer handle make it stick or bind when the temperature drops.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the outer handle on the affected door.

Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Raise the glass fully.





2. Using the appropriate trim tool, pry out on the lower portion of the inner handle cap to release the hooks.





3. Remove the screws from the inner handle.





4. Using the appropriate trim tool, pry out on the upper portion of the front door cap to release the hooks, then remove the cap and the screw.

5. If equipped, remove the front door tweeter. Detach the clip, and remove the door mirror trim. Then disconnect the connector.





6. Remove the door panel with as little bending as possible to avoid creasing or breaking it.

^ Start at the bottom edge of the door panel, release the clips with a commercially available trim pad remover.

^ Detach the upper clips.

^ Starting at the rear, pull the door panel upward.

^ Disconnect the seat position memory switch connector ('08-09 models only).

NOTE:
The inner handle cable and the latch cable are connected to the inner handle. Do not pull the door panel up too far, or these cables will be damaged.





7. While holding the door panel away from the door remove the inner handle from the door panel by detaching the clips. Then remove the door panel.





8. Disconnect the power door lock actuator connector.

9. Remove the plug cap, then remove the plastic cover as needed.





10. Detach the rod fastener.





11. Remove the maintenance seal. Using a clip remover, disconnect the outer handle rod.





12. Remove the bolt, and free the center lower channel.





13. Driver's door: Pull both side flanges of the retainer outward, and pull the middle portion of the outer casing cover out, then disconnect the door lock cylinder cable from the latch.





14. Remove the bolt, then remove the spacer by sliding it around the projection on the handle.





15. Remove the bolt securing the outer handle protector. Loosen the mounting nut, and remove the support bar. Remove the protector by releasing the hook.





16. While pulling the outer handle, remove the handle from the holes in the door panel. Take care not to scratch the door.





17. Remove the rod fastener from the outer handle, then remove the handle.

18. Install the new door outer handle.

19. Reinstall the support bar, and torque the bolt and nut to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

20. Reinstall the spacer, and torque the bolt to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

21. Reinstall the door lock cylinder cable to the latch.

22. Reinstall the center lower channel, and torque the bolt to 8 N.m (5 lb-ft).

23. Reinstall the outer handle rod, the maintenance seal, and the plastic cover, then reconnect the power door lock actuator.

24. Reinstall the door panel and the front door cap.
