Ignition System: Description and Operation
The electronic ignition system employed in 1986-87 Acura models controls ignition timing and spark advance both electronically (ignition timing control system) and mechanically (distributor centrifugal advance) in response to engine speed, load, and coolant temperature. The control system supplies vacuum advance in response to manifold vacuum and coolant temperature. This control optimizes ignition timing during and after engine warm-up to control emission levels and maximize fuel economy and engine performance.
The control system consists of a dual diaphragm distributor, ignition control solenoid valve(s) activated by the electronic control unit (ECU), and a check valve and vacuum reservoir (Legend models only).
