State Emission Test Failure
SYMPTOM
Some 1986-1987 Integras may fail the tailpipe emission test of certain states' inspection and maintenance programs.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Abnormally high under-hood temperature due to high ambient temperature causes an interruption of the emission control feedback system at idle.
NOTE: All Acura automobiles meet the E.P.A. and California emission standards when tested under the E.P.A. certification procedure.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Check to make sure that the emission control system key areas are functioning properly by performing the following tests:
1. Prior to testing, drive the car until the radiator fans come on. This ensures proper operation of the catalytic converter.
2. Check the ECU for any stored failure codes, and repair as necessary. Refer to page 11-10 of the service manual.
3. Connect a fuel pressure gauge, and verify that the fuel pressure is within the standards. Refer to page 11-51 of the service manual.
4. If the car still fails the test after completing any necessary repairs, install the ECU listed in PARTS INFORMATION.
5. If the car continues to fail the test even after installing the new ECU, then contact Tech Line for further assistance.
