Replacement

NOTE: If equipped with theft protection circuit, get customer's code number before disconnecting battery.

1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery from vehicle.
2. Remove air intake hose and battery tray, then the starter.
3. Disconnect transaxle ground cable, then remove speed sensor. Leave hoses connected to sensor.
4. Disconnect all electrical connectors, then the vacuum modulator valve hose.
5. Drain transaxle fluid, then reinstall drain plug.
6. Disconnect cooler hoses at joint pipes. Turn hose ends up.
7. Remove center beam, then exhaust header pipe.
8. Remove front axles as follows:
a. Loosen front wheel spindle nuts, then raise and support front of vehicle.
b. Remove front wheels, then the spindle nuts.
c. Working at one side at a time, position suitable floor jack under lower control arm, then remove lower ball joint cotter pin and nut. Position floor jack under control arm at the ball joint.
d. Using suitable puller, separate ball joint from front hub.
e. Slowly lower floor jack to lower the control arm, then pull front hub outward to completely separate drive axle from front hub spindle.
f. Using suitable pry tool, pry CV joint outward 1/2 inch from differential side gear to release spring clip from side gear groove. Use caution not to damage oil seal. Do not pull drive axle from side gear prior to releasing spring clip, as CV joint damage may occur.
g. Pull drive axles from side gear or intermediate shaft. When pulling axle shafts, hold inboard CV joint horizontal to prevent damaging oil seal.
9. Remove drive axle intermediate shaft as follows:
a. Remove three attaching bolts from outer intermediate shaft support bearing.
b. Lower outer intermediate shaft and support bearing to steering gear and pull shaft from differential. When pulling intermediate shaft, hold shaft horizontal until clear of the differential to prevent damaging oil seal.
10. Remove engine and right wheelwell splash shields.
11. Remove right damper pinch bolt, then separate right damper fork and damper.
12. Remove right radius rod, then front and rear engine stiffeners.
13. Remove torque converter cover and cable holder.
14. Remove shift control cable by removing cotter pin, control pin and control lever roller from the control lever.
15. Remove shift control cable guide, then the driveplate bolts one at a time while rotating crankshaft pulley.
16. Remove mounting bolts from front engine mount, then the two mounting bolts from rear engine mount bracket.
17. Remove front and rear transaxle housing mounting bolts (engine side).
18. Remove mounting bolts from transaxle mount bracket, then loosen differential housing mounting bolt.
19. Attach chain hoist to transmission housing hoist bracket and differential housing to engine mounting bolt, then place jack under transaxle. Lift engine slightly to unload mounts.
20. Remove front engine mount, then the four transaxle housing mounting bolts and two mount bracket bolts.
21. Pull transmission away from engine until it clears the dowel pins, then remove transaxle from vehicle.
