Product Update:
Vigor Distributor

BACKGROUND

Inadequate venting may allow moisture to build up in the distributor cap and prevent the engine from starting. This product update is being conducted to eliminate this problem.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take the car to a dealership for repair. The text of the customer letter is included with this service bulletin.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the distributor assembly and related parts with the updated parls in the kit listed under PARTS INFORMATION.

1. Remove the two bolts holding the rear heat shield. Pull the heat shield up slightly to release the bottom tab. Push the heat shield down out of the way.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wires and coil wire from the distributor cap.

3. Remove and discard the number 4 and 5 spark plug wires. Remove the bolt holding the spark plug wire holder to the rear of the valve cover. Move the wires out of the way.

4. Remove the three bolts, then remove the engine harness cover. Disconnect the vent hoses from the cover.

5. Remove the two distributor hold-down bolts, then remove the distributor. Note the position of the distributor drive tabs and the reference line on the end of the shaft.

6. Remove the heat shield from the distributor. Install it on the new distributor assembly.

7. Apply a light coat of oil to the new O-rings. Verify that the tabs and reference line on the distributor drive are in the same position as noted in step 5, then install the new distributor.

NOTE:
Although the distributor drive tabs are off set, it is still possible to install the distributor 1800 out of phase. Check the position carefully before installation.

8. Connect the vent hoses to the new engine harness cover. Install the harness cover with the original bolts.

9. Reinstall the spark plug wire holder on the valve cover.

10. Install the new number 4 and 5 spark plug wires on the spark plugs.

11. Connect the spark plug wires and coil wire to the distributor cap.

12. Install the rear heat shield. Make sure the bottom tab is in its slot.

13. Center-punch a completion mark above the last digft of the engine compartment VIN.
