Backup Lamp: Description and Operation

With the ignition switch in RUN, voltage is applied through fuse 23 to the A/T gear position switch (automatic transmission), or to the back-up light switch (manual transmission). When you shift the gear selector lever to reverse, the A/T gear position switch or the back-up light switch closes. Voltage is applied to the back-up lights and the back-up lights go on.
