Computers and Control Systems: Adjustments

NOTE: For Canada models, set the parking brake and ensure the headlights remain OFF.
1. Start the engine and warm it to operating temperature (the cooling fan comes ON).
2. Connect a tachometer.
3. Turn off the engine. Check that the throttle cable operates smoothly with no binding or sticking.

Throttle Cable:

4. Check cable free play at the throttle linkage. The cable deflection should be:

0.039 - 0.043 in (10-12 mm)

5. If free play is not within specifications, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting nut, until the freeplay is as specified.
6. Tighten the locknut and recheck the cable freeplay and if necessary readjust.
7. With the cable properly adjusted, check the throttle valve to be sure it opens fully when you push the accelerator to the floor. Also check that the throttle valve returns to the idle position when you release the accelerator.

Tachometer Hook-up/Non - Inductive:

8. Remove the rubber cap from the tachometer connector and connect a tachometer.

9. Set front wheels in the straight ahead position, with all accessories turned off, check idle speed in no load condition. Idle should be:

680 +/- 50 RPM (Manual)
630 +/- 50 RPM (Automatic, Park position)

Service Check Connector:

10. Connect the SERVICE CHECK CONNECTOR with a jumper wire.

11. Check the yellow LED display at the ECM or PCM under the carpet at the passenger footwell.

Idle Adjustment Screw:

NOTE:

a. If yellow LED is off, do not adjust idle adjusting screw. Go to step #13.
b. If yellow LED is blinking, adjust idle adjusting screw 1/4 turn clockwise.
b. If yellow LED is on, adjust idle adjusting screw 1/4 turn counter-clockwise

12. Check that the yellow LED goes off after approximately 30 seconds. If it does not, rotate the idle adjusting screw 1/4 turn in the same direction, repeat this procedure until the yellow LED goes off.

13. Check idle speed with headlights on HIGH, rear window defogger ON, A/C compressor operating and steering wheel turning. Idle speed should be:

680 +/- 50 RPM (Manual)
630 +/- 50 RPM (Automatic, Park position)

NOTE:
a. If applicable, with automatic transmission in gear (except N or P position). Idle should remain stable at: 630 +/- 50 RPM

13. Remove the jumper wire from the service check connector terminal.

NOTE:
a. when there is no code stored, the MIL will stay on if the service check connector is jumped.

14. Cold engine idle speed is not adjustable. If engine idle speed is not within specifications refer to COMPUTERS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS.
