Heated Glass Element: Description and Operation

The rear window defogger heats the rear window to remove condensation and restore visibility.

Voltage is applied at all times through fuse 33 to the rear window defogger relay. With the ignition switch in RUN, voltage is applied through fuse 3 to the rear window detogger relay coil and the detogger ON indicator.

When you push the detogger switch once, the defogger timer circuit in the integrated control unit grounds the defogger relay coil and the defogger ON indicator. The defogger ON indicator light comes on and the relay contacts close. Voltage is applied to the defogger grid on the inside surface of the rear window. As the grid heats the window, condensation evaporates from the glass.

You can turn the defogger off by pushing the switch a second time or by turning the ignition switch to OFF. A timer in the integrated control unit will automatically turn the defogger off after it has been on continuously for 20 to 30 minutes.
