Front
Knuckle/Hub and Wheel Bearing Replacement
1. Pry the spindle nut stake away from the spindle, then loosen the nut.
2. Loosen the wheel nuts slightly.
3. Raise the front of the car and support on safety stands in proper locations.
4. Remove the wheel nuts, wheel and spindle nut.
5. Remove the brake hose mounting bolts.
6. Remove the speed sensor from the knuckle and front lower arm, but do not disconnect it.
NOTE: Be careful when installing the sensors to avoid twisting wires.
7. Remove the caliper mounting bolts and hang the caliper assembly to one side.
CAUTION: To prevent accidental damage to the caliper assembly or brake hose, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper assembly from the under-carriage.
8. Remove the 6 mm brake disc retaining screws.
9. Screw two 8 x 12 mm bolts into the disc to push it away from the hub.
NOTE: Turn each bolt two turns at a time to prevent cocking the disc excessively.
10. Remove the cotter pin from the tie-rod ball joint nut and remove the nut.
11. Install a 12 mm hex nut on the ball joint. Be sure that the 12 mm hex nut is flush with the ball joint pin end, or the threaded section of the ball joint pin might be damaged by the ball joint remover.
12. Separate the tie-rod ball joint and knuckle using the special tool.
CAUTION: Avoid damaging the ball joint boot.
NOTE: If necessary, apply penetrating type lubricant to loosen the ball joint.
NOTE: Use the ball joint remover (07MACSL00200) by adjusting it so that its upper section and lower section are parallel to each other.
13. Remove the cotter pin and lower arm ball joint nut.
14. Install a 14 mm hex nut on the ball joint. Be sure that the 14 mm hex nut is flush with the ball joint pin end or the threaded section of the ball joint pin might damaged by the ball joint remover.
15. Separate the ball joint and lower arm using the special tool.
CAUTION: avoid damaging the ball joint boot.
NOTE: If necessary, apply penetrating type lubricant to loosen the ball joint.
16. Remove the cotter pin and upper ball joint nut.
17. Install a 10 mm hex nut on the ball joint. Be sure that the 10 mm hex nut is flush with the ball joint pin end or the threaded section of the ball joint pin might damaged by the ball joint remover.
18. Separate the upper arm ball joint and knuckle using the special tool.
CAUTION: avoid damaging the ball joint boot.
NOTE: If necessary, apply penetrating type lubricant to loosen the ball joint.
19. Remove the knuckle assembly.
20. Pull the knuckle outward and remove the driveshaft outboard joint from the knuckle using a plastic hammer.
Wheel Bearing Replacement
NOTE: Replace the bearing with a new one after removal
21 Carefully clamp the caliper bracket mount section of the knuckle in a vise with soft jaws.
22. Separate the hub from the knuckle using a commercially available hub puller.
CAUTION: Hold the knuckle securely so it does not slip out of the vise from the impact.
CAUTION: Take care not to distort the splash guard.
23 Remove the splash guard.
24 Remove the circlip from the knuckle.
25. Press the wheel bearing out of the knuckle using a hydraulic press and the special tools shown.
26. Remove the outboard bearing inner race from the hub using the special tools shown and a bearing puller.
NOTE: Wash the knuckle and hub thoroughly in high flash point solvent before reassembly.
27. Press a new wheel bearing into the knuckle using a hydraulic press and the special tools shown.
28. Install the circlip securely in the knuckle groove.
29. Install the splash guard and tighten the screws.
30. Place the front hub in the special tool fixture, then set the knuckle in position and apply downward pressure with a hydraulic press.
