Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The control module is used as a timing device for the ignition coil. By modifying the pulse supplied to the control module, the Engine Control Module (ECM) is able to retard or advance ignition timing as conditions require.

OPERATION
It is powered by ignition switch and receives power anytime the switch is turned ON. Based on the information provided by other sensors, the ECM pulses the signal to the control module. Each time the module is pulsed, the ignition coil is signaled to supply a spark to a spark plug. By modifying the pulse supplied to the module the ECM is able to retard or advance ignition timing as conditions require.
