Air Temperature Sensor ( Ambient / Intake ): Description and Operation

Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Operation:

PURPOSE
Provides information on intake air temperature to the engine control electronics.

OPERATION
The electrical resistance decreases as the intake air temperature increases as shown in the image.

CONSTRUCTION
The sensor is a temperature dependent resistor (thermistor), mounted in a plastic case designed to attach to the intake manifold. The sensing element protrudes into the intake air stream.
