Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation

Ignition Control Module (ICM):

PURPOSE
The Ignition Control Module (ICM) is used as a timing device for the ignition coil. By modifying the pulse supplied to the module, the (ECM) is able to retard or advance ignition timing as conditions require.

OPERATION
It is powered by ignition switch terminal Ign. 1 and receives power anytime the switch is turned ON. Based on the information provided by the Crankshaft Position (CKP) and Cylinder Position (CYP) sensors, the ECM pulses the signal to the module. Each time the module is pulsed, the ignition coil is signaled to send a spark to a spark plug. By modifying this pulse the ECM is able to retard or advance ignition timing as conditions require.

CONSTRUCTION
Consists of a sealed weatherproof module with two multipin connectors.
