General Description
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) modulates pressure of brake fluid to each caliper whenever wheels are likely to be locked due to excessive braking. This prevents locking of the wheels and allows for better handling of vehicle. The anti-lock brake control unit receives input from individual speed sensors located at each wheel and from the ABS pressure switch. The anti-lock brake control unit uses inputs to control the modulator unit, which adjusts hydraulic pressure applied to each caliper on the basis of signals received from the anti-lock brake control unit. The anti-lock brake control unit has a self-diagnosis function that monitors main systems functions. When an abnormality is detected, the ABS warning indicator light goes on and the anti-lock brake control unit turns off the ABS fail-safe relays and motor relay. The anti-lock brake system is disabled, but the conventional brake system continues to operate normally.
