Warranty Extension: EPS Control Unit
(Supercedes 99-028, EPS Indicator Comes On With DTC 22, dated July 12, 1999)
*BACKGROUND
Worn contacts on a relay in the Electrical Power Steering control unit can cause the FPS indicator on the instrument panel to come on.
Because of this, Acura is extending the warranty on the EPS control unit to 8 years, with no mileage limit, from the date of original sale. This warranty extension affects only the EPS control unit. All other components of the steering system are warranted for 4 years or 50,000 miles.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this warranty extension. An example of the customer notification is at the end of this service bulletin.*
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the EPS control unit with an updated unit.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
*1. Troubleshoot the cause of the EPS light coming on.
^ If the problem is in the EPS control unit, continue to step 2.
^ If the problem is in another component, disregard this service bulletin. Replace the defective component; refer to the flat rate manual for the proper warranty information.*
2. Remove the dashboard lower cover below the glove box.
3. Remove the clip, then pull back the carpet on the passenger's side.
4. Remove the speaker cover and the speaker.
5. Disconnect the three connectors from the EPS control unit.
6. Remove the EPS control unit.
7. Install the new EPS control unit. Torque the mounting bolts to 9.8 Nm (7 lb-ft).
8. Reinstall the speaker, speaker cover, carpet, and dashboard lower cover.
9. Start the engine, and make sure the EPS indicator goes out. If the indicator remains on, read out and diagnose the DTC.
10. Center-punch a completion mark above the third character of the engine compartment VIN.
