Corrective Action
Replace the driver's side multiplex control unit (see PARTS INFORMATION). Locate the serial number on the passenger's side multiplex control unit, and replace the unit if it falls within the affected serial number range.Driver's Side MCU Replacement
1. Make sure you have the audio system anti-theft code, and record the radio station presets.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
3. Remove the driver's side scuff plate and kick panel.
4. Remove the footrest (dead pedal).
5. Disconnect all the electrical connectors from the under-dash fuse/relay box except the SRS main harness connector (the double-locked, yellow harness connector).
6. Remove the nut and bolt mounting the under-dash fuse/relay box. Pull the box straight out away from the body.
7. Remove the MCU from the back of the under-dash fuse/relay box. Disconnect the 16P and 26P connectors from the MCU.
8. Connect the 16P and 26P connectors to the new MCU. Connect the MCU to the back of the under-dash fuse/relay box.
9. Install the under-dash fuse relay box, and connect all removed electrical connectors.
10. Install the footrest, kick panel and scuff plate.
11. Reconnect the negative cable from the battery.
12. Verify that the windows operate normally.
13. Enter the audio system anti-theft code and the radio station presets. Set the clock.
14. Vehicles with Navigation System: perform the Navigation System setup procedure (see service bulletin 96-027, 3.5RL: TQI of The Navigation System).
Passenger's Side MCU Inspection
15. Remove the passenger's side scuff plate and kick panel.
16. Check the serial number on the MCU. Determine if it is within the affected range.
Affected Serial Number Range: 114857 to 116966
^ If the serial number is outside the affected range, install the removed parts, center-punch a completion mark above the engine compartment VIN, and return the car to the customer.
^ If the serial number is within the affected range, continue to Passenger's Side MCU Replacement.
Passenger's Side MCU Replacement
17. Remove the dashboard lower coven
18. Pull the carpet away from the MCU.
19. To gain better access to the MCU, pull connectors C441 and C442 toward the rear of the car so they come loose from their body mount. Move the harness out of the way.
20. Disconnect the 22P and 26P connectors from the MCU.
21. Remove the two MCU front mounting bolts, and loosen the rear mounting bolt. Remove the MCU.
22. Install the new MCU. Connect the 22P and 26P connectors.
23. Install all removed parts.
24. Test the windows for normal operation.
25. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character (J) of the engine compartment VIN.
