Starter Makes a Grinding Noise

SYMPTOM

A grinding noise is heard intermittently while starting the engine.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The drive plate gear teeth are mis-manufactured.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the drive plate.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Remove the transmission. Refer to page 14-116 of the 1996-02 3.5RL Service Manual.

2. Install the new drive plate. Refer to page 7-7.

3. Reinstall the transmission. Refer to page 14-188.
