Rack Guide AdjustmentNOTE: Perform rack guide adjustment with the wheels in the straight ahead position.
1. Loosen the rack guide screw locknut with the special tool.
'96 - 98 models: Loosen the rack guide screw.
'99-03 models: Remove the rack guide screw. Remove the old sealant from the rack guide screw threaded section, and apply new sealant to the all around threads. Loosely install the rack guide screw on the steering gearbox.
2. Tighten the rack guide screw to 25 Nm (2.5 kgf-m, 18 ft. lbs.), then loosen it.
3. Retighten the rack guide screw to 5.9 Nm (0.6 kgf-m, 4 ft. lbs.), then back it off to specified angle.
Specified Return Angle: 15 ± 5°
4. Tighten the locknut while holding the rack guide screw.
5. Check for tight or loose steering through the complete turning travel.
6. Perform the following inspections.
- Steering operation.
- Power assist with vehicle parked.
