Cylinder Head Removal

Engine removal is not required for this procedure.

WARNING: Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to correct positions on the engine.

CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100°F (38°C) before loosening the retaining bolts.

NOTE:
- Unspecified items are common.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid Disconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
- Inspect the timing belt before removing the cylinder head.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
3. Drain the engine coolant.
- Remove the radiator cap to speed draining.
4. Remove the engine compartment covers.
5. Remove the wire harness clamps from the strut brace, then remove the strut brace.
6. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control canister hose, breather hose and vacuum hose, then remove the intake air duct.
7. Remove the throttle body cover and intake manifold cover.
8. Remove the throttle cable and cruise control cable by loosening the locknuts, then slip the cable ends out of the throttle linkage.

9. Remove the ignition wire holder, ignition wire cover and intake manifold covers.
10. Relieve fuel pressure.

WARNING: Do not smoke while working on the fuel system, keep open flame and sparks away from the work area. Drain fuel only into an approved container.

11. Remove the fuel feed hose and fuel return hose.

12. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, vacuum hoses and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose.

13. Remove the vacuum hose, breather hose and water bypass hoses.

14. Move the auto-tensioner to remove tension from the alternator belt, and remove the alternator belt.
15. Remove the side engine mount.

NOTE:
- Support the engine before removing the side engine mount with a jack.
- Make sure to place a cushion between the oil pan and the jack.

16. Loosen the adjusting nut, and remove the locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt and pump.
- Do not disconnect the P/S hoses.
17. Disconnect the condenser fan motor connector, and remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor clutch connector from the condenser fan shroud.

18. Remove the condenser fan/shroud assembly.

19. Disconnect the 4p connector and BLK wire from the alternator. then remove the alternator and bracket.
20. Remove the engine wire harness connectors and wire harness clamps from the cylinder head and the intake manifold.
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector
- Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector
- Throttle position sensor connector
- Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor connector
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
- ECT switch A connector
- ECT switch B connector
- ECT gauge sending unit connector
- CKP sensor connector
- TDC sensor connector
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve connector
- Distributor connector
- VTEC solenoid valve connector
- VTEC pressure switch connector
- Oil pressure switch connector

21. Remove the spark plug caps and distributor from the cylinder heads.

22. Remove the intake manifold.

NOTE: Fill the intake ports with clean shop towels to prevent foreign materials from getting in to the cylinder.

23. Disconnect the six injector connectors.

24. Remove the fuel rails.

25. Remove the vacuum hoses from the Fuel Injection Air (FIA) control valve.
26. Remove the timing belt.

27. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses.

28. Remove the heater hoses.
29. Remove the front and rear exhaust manifolds.
30. Remove the water passage.

31. Remove the camshaft pulleys and back covers.

32. Remove the cylinder head covers.
33. Remove the cylinder head bolts, then remove the cylinder head.

CAUTION: To prevent warpage, unscrew the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat until all bolts are loosened.
