Removal and Installation

REMOVAL

CAUTION:
- Turn the crankshaft pulley so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) before removing the belt.
- Inspect the water pump before installing the timing belt.
- Replace the timing belt at 105,000 miles (168,000 km) according to the maintenance schedule (normal conditions/severe conditions). If the vehicle is regularly driven in one or more of the following conditions, replace the timing belt at 60,000 miles (USA) or 100,000 km (Canada);
- In very high temperatures (over 110°F, 43°C)
- In very low temperatures (under -20°F, -29°C)

1. Remove the splash shield.
2. Move the auto-tensioner to remove tension from alternator belt, then remove the alternator belt.

3. Loosen the adjusting bolt, locknut and mounting then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump

4. Remove the dipstick and tube.
5. Remove the side engine mount.

NOTE:
- Support the engine before removing the side engine mount with a jack.
- Make sure to place a cushion between the oil pan and the jack.

6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove the upper and lower covers.

NOTE: Do not use the upper and lower covers to store removed items.

8. Remove one of the battery clamp bolts from the battery tray, and grind the end of it as shown.

9. To hold the timing belt adjuster in its current position, thread in the battery clamp bolt hand-tight.

NOTE: Hand-tighten the battery clamp bolt only, do not use any tools.

10. Loosen the idler pulley bolt about five or six turns, then remove the timing belt.

INSTALLATION
When Replacing Belt

NOTE: This procedure is for replacing the timing belt. Install the timing belt in the reverse order of removal; Only key points are described here.

NOTE: Clean the upper and lower covers before installing then.

Drive Pulley At TDC:

1. Set the timing belt drive pulley so the No. 1 piston is at TDC. Align the dimple on the tooth of the timing belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.

2. Set TDC to the camshaft pulleys so the No. 1 piston is at. Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulleys pointers on the back covers.
3. Remove the battery clamp bolt from the back cover.
4. Remove the auto-tensioner.
5. Hold the auto-tensioner with the maintenance bolt pointing up. Loosen and remove the maintenance bolt.

NOTE: Handle the auto-tensioner carefully so the oil inside does not spill or leak. Replenish the auto-tensioner with oil if any spills or leaks. The total capacity is 6.5 mm (0.22 fluid oz.).

6. Clamp the boss of the auto-tensioner in a soft-jawed vise.

NOTE: Do not grip the housing of the auto-tensioner.

7. Insert a flat blade screwdriver into the maintenance hole. Place the stopper (P/N 14540-P8A-A01) on the auto-tensioner while turning the screwdriver clockwise to compress the bottom.

NOTE: Take care not to damage the threads or the gasket contact surface with the screwdriver.

8. Reinstall the maintenance bolt.

NOTE: Be sure to use a new casket.

9. Make sure no oil is leaking around the maintenance bolt, then install the auto-tensioner.

NOTE: Make sure the stopper stays in place.

Timing Belt Installation Sequence:

10. Install the timing belt tightly in the sequence shown.
1) Timing belt drive pulley
2) Adjusting pulley
3) Rear camshaft pulley
4) Water pump pulley
5) Front camshaft pulley
6) Idler pulley.

NOTE: Make sure the timing belt drive pulley and camshaft pulleys are at TDC.

Idler Pulley:

11. Tighten the idler pulley bolt.

Belt Stopper:

12. Remove the stopper.
13. Install the lower cover and upper covers.
14. Install the crankshaft pulley, then tighten the pulley bolt.
15. Rotate the crankshaft pulley about five or six turns clockwise so the timing belt positions on the pulleys.

16. Check that the crankshaft pulley and camshaft pulleys are at TDC.
17. If either camshaft is not at TDC, remove the timing belt and adjust the positioning following the procedure, then reinstall the timing belt.
18. After installation, adjust the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt.

When Reusing Belt

NOTE: This procedure if followed when reusing the timing belt. Install the timing belt in the reverse order of removal; Only key points are described here.

NOTE: Clean the upper and lower covers before installing.

Drive Pulley At TDC:

1. Set the timing belt drive pulley so the No. 1 piston is at TDC. Align the dimple on the tooth of the timing belt drive pulley with the pointer on the oil pump.

2. Set the camshaft pulleys so the No. 1 piston is at TDC. Align the TDC marks on the camshaft pulleys to the pointers on the back covers.

Timing Belt Installation Sequence:

3. Install the timing belt tightly in the sequence shown.
1. Timing belt drive pulley
2. Adjusting pulley
3. Rear camshaft pulley
4. Water pump pulley
5. Front camshaft pulley
6. Idler pulley

NOTE:
- If the auto-tensioner has extended and the timing belt cannot be installed, remove and compress the auto-tensioner.
- Take care not to damage the timing belt when installing it.
- Make sure the timing belt drive pulley and camshaft pulleys are at TDC.

Idler Pulley:

4. Tighten the idler pulley bolt.
5. Remove the battery clamp bolt.
6. Install the lower cover and upper covers.
7. Install the crankshaft pulley, then tighten the pulley bolt.
8. Rotate the crankshaft pulley about five or six turns clockwise so the timing belt positions on the pulleys.

9. Check that the crankshaft pulley and camshaft pulleys are at TDC.
10. If either camshaft pulley is not at TDC, remove the timing belt and adjust the positioning, then reinstall the timing belt.
11. After installation, adjust the P/S pump belt.
