Repair Procedure
1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the audio unit, then write down your customer's radio station presets.2. Disconnect the battery negative cable and the battery positive cable; then wail at least 3 minutes to allow the SRS control unit to discharge.
3. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel (two screws).
4 Unplug the cable reel 2P connector from the driver's airbag 2P connector.
NOTE:
When unplugged, the driver's airbag 2P connector is automatically shorted.
5. Make sure the front wheels are aligned straight ahead.
6. Remove the coin pocket, then remove the dashboard lower cover (one screw and seven clips). Remove the knee holster (four bolts).
7. Remove the two Torx bolts from the steering wheel, then remove the driver's airbag.
8. Unplug the connectors from the remote audio and cruise control set/resume/cancel switches, then remove the steering wheel bolt.
9. Use a commercially available steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel from the steering column.
10. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers (five screws).
11. Unplug the combination switch assembly harness 4P connector from the cable reel. Detach the cable reel 2P connector from its connector holder, and unplug the 2P connector from the SRS main harness.
12. Remove the cable reel from the steering column (three screws).
13. Remove the combination switch assembly from the steering column (three screws) to expose the copper shield on the steering column ball bearing.
14. Use a small, flat-tip screwdriver to lightly dimple the shield in eight places as shown.
NOTICE
Do not press too hard with the screwdriver when dimpling the shield. Excessive pressure can cause too much deformation of the shield, resulting in high rotation torque of the steering column, requiring steering column replacement.
15. Reinstall the combination switch assembly, and secure it with the three screws.
16. Position the cancel sleeve on the combination switch assembly so that the projections on the sleeve are aligned vertically.
17. Carefully reinstall the cable reel, and secure it with the three screws.
18. Plug the combination switch assembly harness 4P connector into the cable reel Plug the cable reel 2P connector into the SRS main harness, and reattach the connector to its connector holder.
19. Reinstall the upper and lower steering column covers, and secure them with the five screws.
20. If needed, center the cable reel by first rotating the reel clockwise until it stops, then rotating it counterclockwise (approximately two and a half turns) until the arrow mark on the reel label points straight up.
21. Reinstall the steering wheel, then plug in the connectors for the remote audio and cruise control set/resume/cancel switches.
22. Reinstall the steering wheel bolt. Torque the bolt to 38 Nm (28 lb-ft).
23. Reinstall the driver's airbag, and secure it with new Torx bolts. Use a Torx 130 bit to torque the bolts to 9.8 Nm (7.2 lb-ft).
24. Reinstall the knee bolster. Torque the bolts to 9.8 Nm (7.2 lb-ft). Reinstall the dashboard lower cover and the coin pocket.
25. Plug the driver's airbag 2P connector into the cable reel 2P connector.
26. Reinstall the access panel.
27. Reconnect the battery positive cable, then reconnect the battery negative cable.
28. Enter the anti-theft code for the audio unit, then enter your customer's radio station presets. Reset the clock.
