Moonroof Seal Sticks Up
(Supersedes 96-021, dated June 11, 1996)

PROBLEM





The moonroof seal along the front edge of the glass sticks up after the moon roof has been tilted up in the back.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

[NEW] Elongate the mounting holes in the glass bracket, and bond the seal to the moon roof frame with adhesive.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Technical Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Close the moonroof fully and open the sunshade.

2. Remove the bracket cover and the glass mounting nuts from both sides.





3. Note the location of the shims, then remove the moonroof glass.





[NEW] 4. Apply a bead of instant adhesive between the moonroof frame and the seal (see REQUIRED MATERIALS).





5. Close the sunshade. Working from the outside, place a shop cloth on top of the sunshade under the glass bracket.

6. Use a file to elongate the front mounting hole in the glass bracket by 1 mm.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 on the other glass bracket.

8. Apply touch-up paint to the bare metal (see REQUIRED MATERIALS).

9. Reinstall the shims and the moonroof glass. Tighten the mounting nuts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft) while pushing the glass toward the rear of the car.

10. Reinstall the bracket covers.

11. Slide the moon roof back. Apply a silicone lubricant to the moonroof seal along the front edge.

12. Test the moonroof's operation. If the seal still contacts the roof, remove one shim from each side of the front of the moonroof.

NOTE:
If the seal is distorted and will not return to its original shape, replace the moonroof glass.
