Cylinder Head Removal

NOTE:
- Engine removal is not required for this procedure.

WARNING
- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to correct position on the engine.

CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion to avoid damage.
- To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100°F (38°C) before loosening the retaining bolts.

NOTE:
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid Disconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
- Inspect the timing belt before removing the cylinder head.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the No. 1 piston is at top dead center.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
3. Drain the engine coolant. Remove the radiator cap to speed draining.

4. Remove the ground cable and ignition coil wire.
5. Remove the heat shields.
6. Remove the intake air duct.

7. Loosen the adjusting bolt, locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt.
8. Loosen the idler pulley center nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor belt.

9. Loosen the adjusting bolt, lock bolt and mounting bolt, then remove the alternator belt.
10. Remove the throttle cable by loosening the locknut, then slip the cable end out of the accelerator linkage.
11. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control canister hose and vacuum hoses.
12. Relieve fuel pressure.

WARNING: Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame or sparks away from the work area. Drain fuel only into an approved container.

13. Remove the fuel feed hose and fuel return hose.

14. Remove the upper radiator hose and water bypass hoses.

15. Remove the heater hoses and wire harness clamps.

16. Remove the breather hose, vacuum hoses, water bypass hose and wire harness holder.

17. Remove the spark plug wires, distributor and ground cables from the cylinder head.

18. Remove the wire harness covers and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose.
19. Remove the engine wire harness connectors and wire harness clamps from the cylinder head and the intake manifold.
- Five injector connectors
- TDC/CKP/CYP sensor connector
- CKF sensor connector
- Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
- ECT gauge sending unit connector
- ECT switch connector
- Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve lid sensor connector
- Throttle position sensor connector
- Intake Air Bypass (IAB) control solenoid valve connector
- Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge control solenoid valve connector

20. Remove the ground cable and water bypass hose.

21. Remove the intake manifold.

22. Remove the wire harness covers, then disconnect the Primary Heated Oxygen (H02S) connector.

23. Remove the self-locking nut and exhaust manifold brackets.
24. Remove the exhaust manifold.

25. Remove the ground cables and cylinder head cover.
26. Remove the timing belt.
27. Remove the CYP sensor, then remove the camshaft pulley.
28. Remove the CKF sensor.
29. Remove the back cover, then remove the TDC/CKP sensor.

30. Remove the cylinder head bolts, then remove the cylinder head.

CAUTION: To prevent warpage, unscrew the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.
