Engine Removal
WARNING:- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to the correct positions on the engine.
- Make sure the car will not roll off stands and fall while you are working under it.
CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surface.
- Unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion to avoid damage.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection.
Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses or interfere with other parts.
1. Secure the hood open as far as possible.
2. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.
4. Remove the engine ground cables and ignition coil wire.
5. Remove the battery, then remove the heat shields.
6. Remove the battery base.
7. Remove the battery cables from the under-hood fuse/relay box.
8. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector on the right (passenger's) side of the engine compartment.
9. Remove the battery cable from the under-hood ABS fuse/relay box.
10. Remove the intake air duct and vacuum hose.
11. Remove the adjusting bolt, locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt and pump.
12. Loosen the idler pulley center nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor belt.
13. Remove the throttle cable by loosening the locknut, then slip the cable end out of the accelerator linkage.
NOTE:
- Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
- Adjust the throttle cable when installing.
14. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors on the left (driver's) side of the engine compartment.
15. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control canister hose and vacuum hoses.
16. Relieve fuel pressure.
WARNING:
- Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame or sparks away from the work area. Drain fuel only into an approved container.
17. Remove the fuel feed hose, fuel return hose and vacuum hose.
18. Remove the engine wire harness clamp, wire harness stay and ground cable.
19. Remove the A/C compressor.
- Do not disconnect the A/C hoses.
20. Remove the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)/power steering speed sensor. Do not disconnect the fluid hoses.
21. Remove the torque converter cover, then remove the drive plate bolts one at time while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
22. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts and the 26 mm shim.
23. Remove the transmission sub-harness connector.
24. Remove the radiator cap.
WARNING: Use care when removing the radiator cap to avoid scalding by hot coolant or steam.
25. Raise the hoist to full height.
26. Remove the front tires/wheels and splash shield.
27. Drain the engine coolant.
Loosen the radiator drain plug.
28. Drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
29. Drain the differential oil. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
30. Drain the engine oil. Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
31. Remove the damper fork.
32. Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints with the special tool. Refer to Steering and Suspension for the proper procedure.
33. Remove the driveshafts.
NOTE: Coat all precision-finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
34. Remove the wire harness covers, then disconnect the primary Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) connector.
35. Remove exhaust pipe A and the exhaust manifold brackets.
36. Remove the transmission mount and mount bracket.
37. Shift the transmission to the P position.
38. Remove the 33 mm sealing bolt.
39. Remove the extension shaft from the differential using the special tool as shown.
40. Lower the hoist, then remove the upper and lower radiator hoses.
41. Remove the radiator assembly.
42. Remove the heater hoses.
43. Attach the chain hoist to the engine.
44. Disconnect the vacuum hoses, then remove the front engine mounts.
45. Slowly raise the hoist up a little.
46. Remove the mid mounts.
47. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts and the torque converter cover, then separate the engine and the transmission.
Attach the transmission jack with a rubber pad or a wooden block to protect the transmission housing.
48. Reinstall the mid mounts to the transmission and retorque the mounting bolts.
49. Raise the chain hoist to remove all slack from the chain.
50. Check that the engine is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses and electrical wiring.
51. Slowly raise the engine approximately 150 mm (6 inch). Check once again that all hoses and wires are disconnected from the engine.
52. Raise the engine all the way up, and remove it from the vehicle.
