Horn Switch: Testing and Inspection
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures in the SRS section before performing repairs or service.1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then disconnect the positive cable, and wait at least three minutes.
3. Disconnect the airbag connector(s).
Driver's Side:
Switch Test:
^ Remove the access panel from the steering wheel, then disconnect the 2P connector between the driver's airbag and cable reel.
Front Passenger's Side ('95-96 models only):
^ Remove the glove box.
Switch Test:
^ Disconnect the front passenger's 3P connector from the SRS main harness, and connect the short connector (RED) to the front passenger's airbag 3P connector.
4. Remove the dashboard lower cover and knee bolster.
Switch Test:
5. Disconnect the combination switch harness 18P connector from the main harness.
Switch Test:
6. Check for continuity between the No. 4 terminal of the 18P connector of the combination switch harness and body ground with the horn switch pressed.
^ If there is continuity, the horn switch is OK.
^ If there is no continuity, go to step 7.
Switch Test:
7. Carefully remove the cruise control set/resume/cancel switch cover by prying between the cover and the switch in the sequence shown.
Switch Test:
8. Remove the Torx bolts using a Torx T30 bit, then remove the driver's airbag assembly.
Switch Test:
9. Check for continuity between the horn positive terminal and the steering wheel bolt with the horn switch pressed.
^ If there is continuity, check the cable reel.
- check the combination switch harness.
^ If there is no continuity, replace the horn switch.
10. If all the tests prove OK, reconnect the battery cables, and enter the anti-theft code for the radio. Then enter the customer's radio station presets.
