Cowl Drains - Sloshing Noise/Water Leaks

Water Collects in the Cowl

SYMPTOM

A water "sloshing" sound when turning corners, or a water drip from the heater vents.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The cowl drains are clogged with debris.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Modify the cowl cover and cowl drain valves.

Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Technical Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

EPT Sealer 5T: P/N 06991-SA5-000

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Open the hood.





2. Remove the windshield wiper arms.

3. Remove the hood seal and the cowl cover.





4. Pull off the two cowl drain valves by hand.

5. Cut 5 mm off the bottom edge of each valve, then cut a slit as illustrated.

6. Thoroughly clean any dirt or debris from the cowl area.

7. Reinstall the valves.





8. Cut two 8 x 140 mm pieces of EPT Sealer 5T.

9. Install the EPT on the bottom of each end of the cowl cover.

10. Reinstall the cowl cover and the hood seal.





11. Loosely reinstall the wiper arms, and adjust the park position on each one.

12. Torque the wiper arm nuts to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).

13. Operate the wipers at low and high speeds; make sure they do not contact the windshield moldings or the cowl cover.

14. Fill the cowl with some water, and check to see that it drains properly.
