GROWLING OR WHINING FROM THE REAR WHEEL(S)
SYMPTOM
A growling or whining from one or both of the rear wheels when driving. The noise changes in pitch as vehicle speed changes and is not affected by road conditions.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The rear hub bearing unit(s) are contaminated from water dripping down the brake caliper into the bearing seal.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the hub bearing unit, the splash guard, the spindle nut, and the grease cap for both rear wheels.

Each kit contains two hub bearing units, two splash guards (right rear and left rear), two spindle nuts, and two grease caps.

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Technical Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
DIAGNOSIS
Test-drive the vehicle at a steady speed above 35 mph. Turn the steering wheel several times side-to-side from the 11 o'clock to the 1 o'clock position to transfer the vehicle's weight onto the left and right rear wheel bearings. Listen for a growling or whining from the wheel bearings.
^ If you do not hear a growling or whining, disregard this service bulletin, and look for other possible causes of the customer's complaint.
^ If you hear a growling or whining, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Replace the hub bearing unit, the splash guard, the spindle nut, and the grease cap for both rear wheels. Refer to the appropriate service manual.
2. Test-drive the vehicle to make sure the noise is gone.
