Engine Removal

WARNING:
- Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed properly and hoist brackets are attached to the correct positions on the engine.
- Make sure the vehicle will not roll off the stands and fall while you are working under it.


CAUTION:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses or interfere with other parts.

1. Remove the support struts from the engine hood, then fix the engine hood in a vertical position.
2. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
3. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, then the positive terminal.





4. Remove the engine compartment covers and battery cover.





5. Remove the wire harness clamps from the strut brace, then remove the strut brace.





6. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control canister hose, breather tube and vacuum hose, then remove the intake air duct.





7. Remove the battery, battery base and engine ground cable.





8. Remove the throttle body cover and intake manifold cover.





9. Remove the throttle cable and cruise control cable by loosening the locknuts, then slip the cable ends out of the throttle linkage.

NOTE:
- Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
- Adjust the throttle cable when installing.
- Adjust the cruise control cable when installing.





10. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors on the lath Rifle of the Finning.
11. Relieve fuel pressure.

WARNING: Do not smoke while working on the fuel system. Keep open flame and sparks away from the work area. Drain fuel only into an approved container.





12. Remove the fuel feed hose and fuel return hose.





13. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose and vacuum hose.





14. Remove the battery cables from the under-hood fuse/relay box and under-hood ABS fuse/relay box.





15. Disconnect the engine wire harness connectors on the right side of the engine compartment.





16. Move the auto-tensioner to remove tension from the alternator belt, then remove the alternator belt.





17. Loosen the adjusting nut, remove the locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt and pump.
- Do not disconnect the P/S hoses.





18. Remove the wire harness clamp and ground cable.





19. Remove the P/S hose clamp and wire harness clamp.
20. Remove the radiator cap.

WARNING: Use care when removing the radiator cap to avoid scalding by hot coolant or steam.

21. Raise the hoist to full height.





22. Remove the front tires/wheels and the splash shield.
23. Drain the engine coolant.
- Loosen the drain plug in the radiator.
24. Drain the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Reinstall the drain plug using a new washer.
25. Drain the engine oil. Reinstall the drain bolt using a new washer.





26. Remove the center beam.





27. Disconnect the primary heated oxygen sensor (primary HO2S) connector, then remove exhaust pipe A.
28. Remove the damper forks.
29. Disconnect the suspension lower arm ball joints.
30. Remove the driveshafts.

NOTE: Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.

31. Remove the shift cable.

NOTE: Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.





32. Remove the crankshaft pulley.





33. Disconnect the VTEC solenoid valve connector and VTEC pressure switch connector, then remove the VTEC solenoid valve/oil filter assembly.





34. Disconnect the Air Conditioning (A/C) compressor clutch connector, then remove the A/C compressor.
- Do not disconnect the A/C hoses.
35. Lower the hoist.





36. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses.





37. Remove the ATF cooler hoses, then plug the ATE cooler hoses and lines.
38. Remove the radiator.





39. Remove the heater hoses.





40. Attach the chain hoist to the engine as shown.





41. Remove the transmission mount.





42. Remove the side engine mount.





43. Remove the front mount bracket mounting nut.





44. Remove the rear mount bracket mounting nut.
45. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses and electrical wiring.
46. Slowly raise the engine approximately 150 mm (6 inch). Check once again that all hoses and wires are disconnected from the engine/transmission.
47. Raise the engine all the way, and remove it from the vehicle.
