PROBABLE CAUSE

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the torque converter.

DIAGNOSIS

Test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably one with a slight incline, at speeds between 20 and 40 mph with the shift lever in D4. Let the vehicle shift into 4th gear. While maintaining a steady speed, press lightly on the accelerator pedal; this causes the transmission to rapidly engage/disengage the lock-up clutch, placing it in the partial lock-up mode.
