Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

Removal
SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, precautions, and procedures before performing repairs or service.

NOTE: Before removing the steering wheel, align the front wheels straight ahead.

1. Remove the driver's airbag assembly from the steering wheel.

2. Disconnect the horn connector, cruise control switches connector and radio remote switch connector.
3. Remove the steering wheel nut.

4. Remove the steering wheel with a steering wheel puller.

CAUTION:
- Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.
- If you thread the puller bolts into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the steering wheel lower cover and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each Fuller bolt.

Installation

CAUTION: Do not tap on the steering wheel or steering column shaft when installing the steering wheel.

NOTE: Before installing the steering wheel, align the front wheels straight ahead.

NOTE: Be sure the steering wheel shaft engages with the cable reel and canceling sleeve.

3. Connect the cruise control switches connector, the radio remote switch connector, and the horn connector.
4. Install the driver's airbag assembly, and confirm proper system operation.
5. Check the horn, the cruise control switches and the radio remote switch for proper operation.
