Wind Noise From the Center of the Dashboard

SYMPTOM

You hear a wind noise from the center of the dashboard near the windshield base when driving above 50 mph with the climate control in recirculation mode.

PROBABLE CAUSE

There is a gap in the recirculation housing.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the recirculation housing.

Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Technical Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

DIAGNOSIS

1. Test-drive the vehicle above 50 mph.

2. Press the recirculation button on the climate control system.

3. Press the fresh air button. (On vehicles with the Navigation System, press the recirculation button again).

^ If the wind noise is still there, disregard this service bulletin, and look for other possible causes of the noise.

^ If the wind noise goes away, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Recover the refrigerant with a recovery/recycling/charging station (see page 22-75 of the 1996 - 99 3.5RL Service Manual).

2. Remove the evaporator/blower unit (see page 22-65).

3. Replace the recirculation housing (see page 22-67).

4. Reinstall the evaporator/blower unit.

5. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system (see pages 22-88 and 22-89).

6. Test-drive the vehicle to make sure the wind noise is gone.
