1999 3.2TL: TQI of the Navigation System,
(Supersedes 98-023, 1999 3.2TL: TQI of the Navigation System, dated August 31, 1998)

BACKGROUND

The Navigation System uses a database for map information when operating. Since all Navigation Systems come equipped with the same database, you may need to install a different one to cover the area your customer lives in.

This service bulletin gives you information for Total Quality Inspection (TQI) of the Navigation System. These topics are covered:

^ Navigation System Controls

^ Navigation System Operation

^ Database Coverage Areas

^ Climate Control System

^ Navigation System Setup at TQI

For detailed information on system operation, refer to the Navigation System Owner's Manual.

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

Dealers outside of California and Nevada: File a template claim using Template ID 98-023A. This claim pays you 0.3 hour for updating the navigation system hard disk drive (HDD) with new DCA information.

California and Nevada dealers only: All vehicles come with DCA 1 (California/Nevada) software loaded in the navigation system, so there is no need to update the hard disk drive (HDD). Do not file a warranty claim; the procedures in the service bulletin are considered part of TQI.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM CONTROLS

SCREEN - The display screen shows all selections and instructions. It is a touch-screen display that determines your selection by your finger interrupting infrared light beams. Because of this, you do not need to push on the screen; just touch your selection. If the system fails to accept your selection (nothing happens), try moving your finger slightly on the selection; do not push against the screen.

MENU - Press this button to change the display from the current instructions to a menu.

MAP/GUIDE - When on route, press this button to switch between the map and route information.

A/C - Press this button to view a menu of the manual controls for the climate control system.

CANCEL - Press this button to return to the previous screen.

ZOOM - Press these arrows to change the scale (IN or OUT) when viewing a map. When viewing a list, use this control to page up or down.

JOYSTICK - The joystick moves left, right, up, and down. Use it to highlight menu selections, scroll through lists, or look around on maps. Push the joystick to select an item. You can also select an item by touching it on the screen.

SETUP - Touch this screen icon to view a menu of system setup options.
NAVIGATION SYSTEM OPERATION

Selecting a Destination

You can select a destination by any of these means:

^ Address

^ Intersection

^ Place

^ Phone Number of a Point of Interest Personal Address

^ Previous Destination

^ Map Input

^ Today's Destinations

Refer to the Navigation System Owner's Manual for detailed information.

Traveling to a Destination

Confirm a selected route - The system display asks you to select one of these options:

^ Direct Route - A route that takes the least amount of time.

^ Easy Route - A route that has the least amount of turns.

^ Minimize Freeways - A route that avoids freeway travel (when possible).

^ Minimize Thu Roads - A route that avoids toll roads (when possible).

Going off the route - If you leave the route, the system recalculates it from your current position.

Modifying the route - The system can recalculate portions of the route, avoid a specific street, or both, and then return you to the current route.

Save current location - This option stores the current location for later use (it does not change or cancel the route instructions currently in progress). You can store a location any time the vehicle is stopped.

Personal Addresses

Two users can store up to 50 destinations (addresses with phone numbers) in the system once a personal identification number (PIN) is entered. Refer to the Navigation System Owner's Manual for instructions on entering a PIN and using the Personal Addresses function.

System Limitations

Always check the audio and visual route information by carefully looking at road signs, signals, etc. along the way. Use your own good judgement, and obey all traffic laws while you are driving. The navigation system has these limitations:

^ The global positioning system (GPS) satellites used by the navigation system are operated by the U.S. Department of Defense. For security reasons, certain inaccuracies are built into the GPS. This can cause occasional positioning errors of up to several hundred feet. If the navigation system shows your position incorrectly, wait several seconds until it corrects itself. The system may also correct itself after you make a turn or cross a road.

^ The routes calculated by the system may not always be what you think are the most direct ones.

^ Since businesses fail or move to new locations, some information may be inaccurate. Also, route guidance may conflict with actual road conditions, such as street closures, construction, and detours.

^ Occasionally, the system may reboot itself due to excessive heat or shock, or from recalculating a route too many times. Rebooting does not always mean the system needs servicing.

DATABASE COVERAGE AREAS

Seven navigation compact discs (CDs) cover the seven database coverage areas (DCAs) in the U.S. Use the information to select the right CD and install the right DCA on the hard disk drive (HDD) in your customer's vehicle.

All DCAs have two levels of detail: Intertown Coverage and Detailed City Coverage. Intertown coverage is provided for all states and counties. Detailed City Coverage is listed under each DCA as shown.

Intertown Coverage

^ Interstate, Federal, State, Primary County numbered routes, and any road that appears on a AAA state map.

^ Public roads within FAA-certified airports

^ Roads that lead to an included City Center Point of Interest that is listed in the AAA state map index or has a population of 500 or more.

^ Ferry connections for automobiles via rail or boat between qualified roads

^ Roads that connect an included Point of Interest

^ Roads within an included Point of Interest

^ Roads within an included rest stop

^ Ramps, roundabouts, special traffic figures, turn lanes, and U-turn lanes

Detailed City Coverage

^ Named roads

^ Unnamed roads that serve as access to rest areas along motorways

^ Unnamed main paved roads that are within, or lead to included polygons (places such as large shopping centers, universities, cemeteries, golf courses, etc.)

^ Unnamed paved roads that are used only by public vehicles

^ Ferry connections for automobiles via rail or boat

^ Named and addressed walkways

^ Undefined traffic areas with more than 10,800 square feet

^ Ramps, roundabouts, special traffic figures, turn lanes, and U-turn lanes.

^ Service roads

^ Pedestrian streets and pedestrian zones

DCA 2: Northwest/Mountain

DCA 3-5: Midwest/Great Lakes

DCA 4: South Central

DCA 5-6: Ohio Valley/Great Lakes

DCA 7-8: Northern East Coast

DCA 8-9: Southern East Coast

CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM

Pressing the A/C button on the navigation system control panel brings up the A/C manual operation display. You can then change the climate control settings by touching the desired setting or by using the joystick. Refer to the vehicle owner's manual for specific operating instructions.

NAVIGATION SYSTEM SETUP AT TQI

All navigation systems come with DCA 1. If your customer plans to operate the vehicle in areas other than DCA 1, you must install the correct DCA map database on the HDD. If your customer lives in an area covered by combined DCAs, make sure you install the correct DCA by looking up your customer's county on page 4 or 5.

After you install the correct DCA, you must initialize the navigation system to automatically establish communication with several GPS satellites. When initialization is done, the system can "locate" itself and work normally. To install a DCA and initialize the system, do this:

1. Do the TQI on the vehicle. Refer to S/B 98-022, 1999 3.2TL: TQI and New Model Information, filed under TQI.

NOTE:
If your customer will be operating the vehicle in DCA 1, skip steps 2 thru 8, and go to step 9.

2. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0). Open the trunk, and open the door of the navigation system control unit. Press the eject button on the unit, and carefully remove the HDD.

NOTE:
Handle the HDD carefully; it can be easily damaged if it is bumped or dropped.

3. Using the ACURALINK 2000 system, click "Service Bay," "Navigation," then "Navigation Map Update."

4. Carefully insert the HDD into the ACURALINK 2000 card drive, then click "Continue" on the display screen's button panel.

NOTE:
A disclaimer comes up to show that a royalty may be due. This royalty does not apply for the first 2 years from the vehicle delivery date. Your dealership will not be charged for this at TQI.

5. Enter the VIN. The system then prompts you to insert the navigation CD in the CD-ROM drive. Select the correct one from these seven CDs as shown.

NOTE:
Make sure the CD is the latest software version.

6. Click "Refresh" on the button panel, then select the correct DCA from the navigation CD and click "Update." (Refer to illustrations to determine which DCA applies.) It takes about 20 minutes for the system to update the HDD.* If you have any questions or problems during the update, call the Dealer Contact Center at 800-245-4343.*

7. When the update is complete, carefully remove the HDD, then click "Complete" on the button panel.

8. Carefully reinstall the HDD in the navigation system control unit, then close the door on the unit. Close the trunk.

9. Start the engine, and move the vehicle outside, away from buildings and power lines. Enter the navigation system security code. This code is on the Radio Anti-Theft Code card.

NOTE:
If the code is lost, you can find it on the Dealer Communications System (DCS) by selecting the Anti-Theft Code option. Enter the serial number from the bottom of the control unit. If you cannot find the code with DCS, call the Automobile Warranty Department at 310-783-3240.

10. Watch the navigation system display screen and follow the on-screen instructions.

NOTE:
The average initialization takes about 10 minutes to complete, but it can take as long as 45 minutes.

11. If the system does not initialize, this screen comes up. Follow the on-screen instructions.

NOTE:
The initialization screen may come up after battery voltage to the navigation system has been disconnected for more than 5 minutes. If this happens, follow the on-screen instructions. The HDD is not affected by voltage interruptions.

12. When initialization is done, the disclaimer screen comes up. Touch "OK."

13. Drive the vehicle at least half a mile from your dealership, then park it in a safe place.

14. Press the MENU button.

15. Touch "Enter destination by:", then "Places."

16. Touch "Choose a category:", then "Auto Service."

17. Touch "Sub-category:", then "Acura Dealer."

18. Touch "Choose one of the following:", then "Sort by Distance to Travel."

19. Select your dealership from the screen listings, then touch "OK" on the next screen. If your dealership is not listed in the Detailed City Coverage area, select a restaurant or service station close to it.

20. Make sure the navigation system is working properly by following the system's routing prompts while you drive back to your dealership.

21. Touch the "Setup" icon on the screen, then check these settings by touching the screen or using the joystick.

^ Volume set to Med

^ Display set to Auto

^ Reroute set to Auto

22. Touch "Previous" to bring up "To delete:" Select and delete any previous destinations shown except your dealership.

23. Touch "Return" to go back to the Setup screen, then touch "Others."

24. Touch "Clock", and adjust the clock to the correct time.

25. Return to the main menu, then clean the screen with the special cleaning cloth that comes with the system. Do not use shop towels, paper towels, or tissues; these products can scratch or damage the screen.
