Popping Noise From Center Vent
SYMPTOM
A popping noise is heard from the center vent area when the airflow mode changes from the floor vents to the center vents.
PROBABLE CAUSE
Insufficient clearance between the driver's center vent duct and the mode door.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Cut the driver's center vent duct to provide clearance for the mode door.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify the customer's complaint:
- Start the vehicle, and push the AUTO button to turn on the Climate Control.
- Push the MODE button to cycle the mode motor from the floor vents to the center vents several times. Wait two seconds after pushing the MODE button to allow the mode motor to stop before pushing the MODE button again.
- On vehicles equipped with the Navigation System, you must push the A/C button on the right side of the display to access the mode icons.
2. Push the MODE button until the air is flowing from the floor vents.
3. Cover the shift lever and the A/T gear position indicator panel with a shop towel or fender cover.
4. Remove the dashboard. Refer to the 1999 3.2TL Service Manual.
5. Put the dashboard on a padded surface with the bottom facing up.
6. At the driver's center vent duct, measure and mark the duct as shown.
7. Use a pair of end cutters or a coarse metal file to remove the 3 mm by 50 mm section from the duct.
8. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove all of the scrap pieces from the dashboard.
9. Install the dashboard in the reverse order of removal.
10. Start the vehicle, and push the AUTO button to turn on the Climate Control.
11. Push the MODE button to cycle the mode motor from the floor vents to the center vents several times to confirm the popping noise is gone. Remember to wait two seconds after pushing the MODE button to allow the mode motor to slop before pushing the MODE button again.
