Repair Procedure
1. Remove the power steering pump from the car. Refer to page 17-18 of the 1999-01 3.2TL Service Manual or page 17-35 of the 1998 Integra Service Manual.2. Clamp the power steering pump in a vise with soft jaws. Hold the pulley with the special tool, and remove the pulley nut and the pulley.
3. Remove the pump from the vise.
4. Remove the four flange bolts.
5. Hold the power steering pump assembly with the pump cover on the bottom. Loosen the pump housing by gently tapping the side of it with a plastic hammer. With one hand holding the pump cover, slowly pull the housing off. The outer side plate, pump cam ring, pump rotor, and vane assembly will slide out of the housing as an assembly. Place this assembly, as you removed it, on a clean workbench.
NOTE:
Do not tip, lay sideways, or place the assembly upside down after removal from the housing. Do not pull apart the pump cam ring and the pump rotor and vane assembly. Do not disassemble the flow control valve, the inlet joint, and the sub-valve.
6. Remove the snap ring. Use a plastic hammer to tap out the pump shaft and bearing from the housing.
7. With a press and a bearing separator tool (Snap-On Bearing Splitter CJ949 or equivalent), remove the bearing from the pump shaft. Discard the bearing.
8. Install the new bearing using the special tools and a press.
9. Coat the lip of the new pump shaft seal with power steering grease, then install it into the pump housing with the grooved side facing in.
10. Press the shaft and spacer into the pump housing using the special tools. Install the snap ring with the radiused side of the snap ring facing out.
11. Coat the new 15.2 x 2.4 mm 0-ring with power steering fluid, then install it in the side plate.
12. Coat the pump cover seal with power steering fluid, then install the seal in the pump cover.
13. Coat the 51 x 2.4 mm 0-ring with power steering fluid, then install it in the pump housing.
14. While twisting the pump shaft to align the gears, slide the pump cover assembly into the pump. Secure the pump cover assembly to the housing with the four flange bolts. Torque the flange bolts to 20 N.m (14 lb-ft).
15. Reinstall the pulley. Torque the nut to 64 N.m (47 lb-ft).
16. Reinstall the power steering pump on the car.
17. Check the fluid level in the system. Add Honda Power Steering Fluid if necessary.
18. Start the engine, and run it at fast idle; then turn the steering from lock-to-lock several times to bleed air from the system.
19. Recheck the fluid level, and add more if necessary. Do not fill the reservoir beyond the upper level line.
