Muffler Paint Peeling (Supersedes 99-051, dated December 20, 1999)
PROBLEM
The black paint is peeling off the muffler(s). This paint is applied only for improved appearance, it is not for corrosion protection.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Repaint the visible areas of the muffler and tailpipe.
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Premium De'cor High Heat Spray Paint, # PD-1552 Flat Black
or
Dupli-Color High Heat Spray Paint, # DH1602 Black
or
Krylon BBQ & Stove Spray Paint, # 1618 BBQ Black

Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Use 220 grit sandpaper to remove the peeling paint and to rough up the surface.
2. Use a solution of dishwashing detergent and water to thoroughly clean the area to be painted.
3. Rinse the surface completely. Make sure you remove all the detergent residue.
4. Allow the surface to dry completely.
5. Clean the surface to be painted with a shop towel saturated with isopropyl alcohol. Allow the alcohol to evaporate completely before continuing.
6. Repaint the cleaned area with one of the spray paints listed under REQUIRED MATERIALS.
