Cylinder Head Removal

Removal

NOTE:
^ Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
^ To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
^ To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100°F (38°C) before loosening the cylinder head bolts.
^ Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid Disconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
3. Drain the engine coolant.

4. Remove the strut brace.

5. Remove the intake manifold cover (A) and ignition coil cover (B).

6. Remove the water bypass hoses (A). Disconnect the TCS control valve actuator connector (B) and TCS control valve angle sensor connector (C) from the TCS control valve assembly, then remove the bolt (D) securing the TCS control valve bracket (J32A2 engine A/T)
7. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) from the throttle body.

8. Remove the vacuum hose (B) and breather pipe (C), then remove the intake air duct (D).

9. Remove the throttle cable (A) and cruise control cable (B) by loosening the locknuts (C), then slipping the cable ends out of the accelerator linkage. Take care not to bend the cables when removing them. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.

10. Remove the breather hose (A) and water bypass hose (B).
11. Relieve fuel pressure.

12. Remove the fuel feed hose (A) and fuel return hose (B).

13. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (A), vacuum hoses (B) and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose (C).

14. Remove the P/S hose clamp (A). Disconnect the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) actuator connector (B), then remove the IMRC actuator (C) (J32A2 engine).

15. Remove two bolts securing the wire harness holder.
16. Support the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan.
17. Remove the side engine mount bracket (see step 8).

18. Move the auto-tensioner (A) to remove tension from the alternator belt (B), then remove the alternator belt.

19. Loosen the adjusting nut (A), and remove the locknut (B) and mounting bolt (C), then remove the P/S pump belt (D) and pump without disconnecting the P/S hoses.
20. Remove the ground cable (E).
21. Remove the alternator.
22. Remove the engine wire harness connectors and wire harness clamps from the intake manifold.
^ Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector
^ Idle Air Control (IAC) valve connector
^ Throttle Position (TP) sensor connector
^ Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor connector
^ Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor connector
^ Radiator fan switch A connector
^ Radiator fan switch B connector (J32A1 engine, J32A2 engine (A/T))
^ Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector
^ Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor connector
^ Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) connector
^ VTEC solenoid valve connector
^ VTEC oil pressure switch connector
^ Oil pressure switch connector

23. Remove the six ignition coils from the front and rear cylinder head covers.

24. Remove the upper cover (A), then remove the intake manifold (B).
25. Disconnect the six fuel injector connectors.

26. Remove the fuel rails.

27. Remove the vacuum hoses (A) from the Intake Air (IA) bypass control valve (B).
28. Remove the timing belt.

29. Remove the heater hoses.

30. Remove the upper radiator hose (A) and lower radiator hose (B).
31. Remove the front and rear exhaust manifolds.

32. Remove the water passage.

33. Remove the camshaft pulleys (A) and back covers (B).
34. Remove the cylinder head covers.
35. Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, unscrew the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.
