Safety Recall: 2001 Integra Passenger's Airbag

BACKGROUND

During the manufacturing process, some passenger's airbags were not welded properly. As a result, the affected airbags may not deploy in a collision, increasing the risk of injury to a front seat passenger.

The 16 vehicles affected have the VINs shown.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign. An example of the customer notification is shown in this service bulletin.

Some affected vehicles may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. According to Federal law, these vehicles cannot be sold or leased until they are repaired.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the passenger's airbag. Do not deploy the removed airbag.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the radio station presets.

2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, then wait at least 3 minutes.

3. Remove the glove box (see page 20-137 of the 1998 Integra Service Manual).





4. Remove the passenger's airbag 2P connector from the connector holder, then disconnect the connector.





5. Remove the mounting nuts from the airbag.

6. Cover the dashboard with a cloth, then carefully pry with a screwdriver to lift the airbag out of the dashboard.

NOTE:
The airbag lid has pawls on its side that attach it to the dashboard.

7. Place the new airbag into the dashboard, and finger-tighten the mounting nuts.

8. Torque the two upper mounting nuts to 9.5 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

9. Make sure the airbag lid is flush with the dashboard, then torque the two lower mounting nuts to 9.5 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

10. Connect the 2P connector, then attach the connector to the connector holder.

11. Install the glove box.

12. Connect the negative cable to the battery.

13. Confirm that the SRS works properly: When you turn the ignition switch to ON (II), the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off. If the indicator doesn't come on, or stays on, refer to section 23 of the service manual for troubleshooting information.

14. Enter the radio anti-theft code and the radio station presets. Set the clock.





15. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.

16. Do not deploy the old airbag; pack it in the box that the new airbag came in.

NOTE:
The old airbag is considered hazardous material for shipping purposes. Refer to Section 8 of the Acura Dealer Operations Manual for instructions on proper handling.

17. Ship the undeployed airbag, freight prepaid, to
