A/T Removal and Installation
RemovalWARNING:
- Make sure lifts, jacks, and safety stands are placed properly, and hoist brackets are attached to the correct position on the engine.
- Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels, so vehicle will not roll off the stands and fall on you while working under it.
NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
1. Disconnect the negative terminal, then disconnect the positive terminal from the battery.
2. Remove the intake air duct and the air cleaner housing assembly.
3. Remove the starter cables. Remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.
4. Remove the transmission ground cable terminal and the radiator hose clamp from the transmission hanger.
5. Disconnect the lock-up control solenoid valve connector, then remove the harness clamp from the clamp bracket.
6. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), the countershaft speed sensor, and the A/T gear position switch connectors.
7. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts.
8. Disconnect the shift control solenoid, the linear solenoid, and the mainshaft speed sensor connectors.
9. Remove the drain plug, and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF). Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.
10. Remove the splash shield.
11. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts, then separate the ball joints from the lower arm. Refer to Steering and Suspension.
12. Remove the right damper fork bolt and damper pinch bolt, then separate right damper fork and damper.
13. Pry the right driveshaft out of the differential, and pry the left driveshaft out of the intermediate shaft.
14. Pull on the inboard joint, and remove the right and left driveshafts.
15. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.
NOTE: Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil.
16. Disconnect the primary heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connector.
17. Remove the exhaust pipe A.
18. Remove the intermediate shaft.
19. Remove the shift cable cover, then remove the shift cable by removing the control lever.
CAUTION: Take care not to bend the shift cable while removing it.
20. Remove the right front mount/bracket.
21. Remove the ATF cooler hoses at the ATF cooler lines. Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the lines and hoses. Check for any sign of leakage at the hose joints.
22. Remove the engine stiffener and torque converter cover.
23. Remove the eight drive plate bolts one at a time while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
24. Place a jack under the transmission, raise the transmission just enough to take weight off of the mounts, then remove the transmission mount.
25. Remove the transmission housing mounting bolts and rear engine mounting bolts.
26. Pull the transmission away from the engine until it clears the 14 mm dowel pins, then lower it on the transmission jack.
Installation
1. Flush the ATF cooler.
2. Install the starter motor on the transmission housing, then install the two 14 mm dowel pins in the torque converter housing. Install the torque converter assembly securely with a new O-ring on the mainshaft.
3. Place the transmission on a transmission jack, and raise it to the engine level.
4. Attach the transmission to the engine, then install the transmission housing mounting bolts and two rear engine mounting bolts with new washers.
5. Install the transmission mount.
6. Install the transmission housing mounting bolts.
7. Remove the transmission jack.
8. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with eight bolts and torque as follows: Rotate the crankshaft as necessary to tighten the bolts to 1/2 of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolts, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.
TORQUE: 12 Nm (1.2 kgf-m, 8.7 ft. lbs.)
9. Install the torque converter cover and engine stiffener.
10. Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt to specified torque.
11. Connect the ATF cooler hoses to the ATF cooler lines.
12. Install the right front mount/bracket.
13. Install the control lever with a new lock washer to the control shaft, then install the shift cable cover.
CAUTION: Take care not to bend the shift cable.
14. Install new set rings on the end of the intermediate shaft and the driveshaft.
15. Install the intermediate shaft.
16. Install exhaust pipe A, and connect the primary heated oxygen sensor (H02S) connector.
17. Install the right and left driveshafts.
NOTE: Turn the right and left steering knuckle fully outward, and slide the right driveshaft into the differential until you feel its spring clip engage the side gear. Slide the left driveshaft into the intermediate shaft until you feel the spring clip of the intermediate shaft engage the driveshaft.
18. Install right damper fork, then install the right and left ball joints to each lower arm with the castle nuts and new cotter pins.
19. Connect the mainshaft speed sensor, the linear solenoid and the shift control solenoid connectors.
20. Install the splash shield.
21. Connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), the countershaft speed sensor, and the A/T gear position switch connectors.
22. Connect the lock-up control solenoid valve connector, then install the harness clamp on the clamp bracket.
23. Install the transmission ground cable terminal on the transmission hanger, and install the radiator hose clamp on the transmission hanger.
24. Connect the starter cables to the starter, and install the harness clamp on the clamp bracket. Make sure the crimped side of the starter cable ring terminal is facing out.
25. Install the air cleaner housing assembly and the intake air duct.
26. Refill the transmission with ATF.
27. Connect the battery positive terminal and negative terminal.
28. Set the parking brake. Start the engine, and shift the transmission through all gears three times.
29. Check the shift cable adjustment.
30. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust it if needed. Refer to Steering and Suspension.
31. Let the engine reach normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on) with the transmission in P or N position, then turn it off and check the ATF level.
32. Perform a road test.
