Audio Unit Does Not Accept Anti-Theft Code

(Supersedes 07-051, dated September 26, 2007, to update the information marked by asterisks)

SYMPTOM

When you correctly enter the audio unit anti-theft code, an error message (ERR1 thru ERR9) appears on the audio unit display.

PROBABLE CAUSE

An internal problem with the audio unit prevents it from accepting its anti-theft code.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

*Have the audio unit repaired, or replace the audio unit with a new unit. (Remanufactured audio units are no longer available for 01-02 models, and remanufactured audio units for 03 models will be after December 31, 2008.)*

DIAGNOSIS

1. Enter the anti-theft code several times.

^ If the audio unit accepts the code, the vehicle is OK at this time.

^ If an error message appears on the audio unit display (ERR1 thru ERR9), go to step 2.

NOTE:

^ To make sure you enter the code correctly, watch the audio unit display as you press the preset buttons.

^ Each time a wrong code is entered, the error message changes from ERR1, to ERR2, to ERR3, up to ERR9. After the 10th attempt, the audio unit loses power. To restore power, turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and remove the ACC/BACKUP fuse from the under-hood fusel relay box for 20 seconds or more. You can also restore power by turning the ignition switch to ACC (I) and leaving the audio unit on for 1 hour.

2. Verify that you are using the correct anti-theft code:

^ Make sure you see CODE in the display. If you do not see this message, reset the audio unit.

^ Turn off the audio unit.

^ Press and hold the No.1 and No.6 preset buttons, then turn on the audio unit. The display toggles between two screens. The first screen displays a U and the first four digits of the serial number (for example, U1234). The second screen displays an L and the last four digits of the serial number (for example, L5678). Ignore the U and L, and write down all eight digits that make up the serial number.

^ Enter the eight-digit serial number into the iN to get the anti-theft code.

- From the main menu, click on SERVICE.

- Click on Vehicle Information.

- Click on Anti-Theft Code Inquiry.

- Select RADIO/CD from the Product list, enter the eight-digit serial number from the audio unit display in the Serial Number field, and click on Submit. The five-digit anti-theft code for that audio unit appears.

Is the code from the IN the same code you were using on the audio unit?

Yes - Go to step 3. No - Go back to step 1.

3. Remove the audio unit, but don't disconnect its connectors.

^ 3.20L - Refer to page 22-170 of the 2001-03 3.20L Service Manual, or

^ 3.2TL - Refer to page 22-202 of the 1999-2003 3.2TL Service Manual, or

^ Online, enter keywords AUDIO REMOVAL, then select Audio Unit Removal/Installation from the list.

4. Disconnect the antenna sub lead from the back of the audio unit, turn the ignition switch to ACC (I), and enter the anti-theft code.

^ If the audio unit accepts the anti-theft code, the audio unit needs to be replaced. Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

^ If the audio unit doesn't accept the anti-theft code, this bulletin does not apply. Give the customer an estimate to repair the audio unit, or contact your DPSM for goodwill consideration.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

*1. Remove the audio unit, have it repaired, and reinstall it, or replace the unit with a new unit.*

^ 3.2 CL - Refer to page 22-170 of the service manual, or

^ 3.2TL - Refer to page 22-202 of the service manual, or
