Parking Brake System: Adjustments
Parking Brake Check and Adjustment A/T Models:Check
Press the parking brake pedal (A) with 294 N (30 kgf, 66 lbs) of force. The parking brake pedal should travel within the specified number of clicks (B).
Pedal locked clicks: 2 - 4
If the number of clicks is excessive, adjust the parking brake pedal. Minor adjustment (1 - 2 clicks) of the parking brake pedal can be made with the adjusting nut in the parking brake pedal. If a larger adjustment is required, do the major adjustment procedure using the adjuster at the parking brake drum.
NOTE: After installing new brake shoes and/or new rear brake disc/drums, make sure to drive the vehicle for "Break-in".
Minor Adjustment
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.
3. Back off the adjusting nut in half turn increments, and check for proper adjustment.
Major Adjustment
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Release the parking brake pedal, and back off the adjusting nut (A) on the parking brake pedal.
3. Remove the rear wheels, and inspect the parking brake shoes.
4. Remove the access plug (A).
5. Turn the brake shoe adjuster (B) up with a flat blade screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock, then back off 8 stops. Do this adjustment on both the right and left brakes.
6. Check the number of clicks by pressing the parking brake pedal with 294 N (30 kgf, 66 lbs) of force.
Pedal locked clicks: 2 - 4
If the pedal travel is not within the specified number of clicks, refer to the parking brake pedal minor adjustment procedure.
7. Install the access plug and rear wheels.
M/T Models:
Check
Pull the parking brake lever (A) with 196 N (20 kgf, 44 lbs) of force to fully apply the parking brake. The parking brake lever should be locked within the specified number of clicks (B). Lever locked clicks: 6 - 10
If the number of clicks is excessive, adjust the parking brake lever. Minor adjustment of the parking brake lever can be made with the adjusting nut. If a larger adjustment is required, do the major adjustment procedure using the adjuster at the parking brake drum.
NOTE: After installing new brake shoes and/or new rear brake disc/drums, make sure to drive the vehicle for "Break-in".
Minor Adjustment
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Pull the parking brake lever up one click.
3. Remove the rear console mat and cover.
4. Tighten the adjusting nut (A) until the parking brakes drag slightly when the rear wheels are turned.
5. Release the parking brake lever fully, and check that the parking brakes do not drag when the rear wheels are turned. Readjust if necessary.
6. Make sure the parking brakes are fully applied when the parking brake lever is pulled up fully.
7. Reinstall the rear console cover and mat.
Major Adjustment
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Remove the rear console mat and cover.
3. Release the parking brake lever, and back off the adjusting nut (A).
4. Remove the rear wheels, and inspect the parking brake shoes.
5. Remove the access plug (A).
6. Turn the brake shoe adjuster (B) up with a flat blade screwdriver (C) until the shoes lock, then back off 8 stops. Do this adjustment on both the right and left brakes.
7. Check the number of clicks by pulling up on the parking brake fever with 196 N (20 kgf, 44 lbs) of force.
Lever locked clicks: 6 - 10
8. If the lever is not within the specified number of clicks, refer to the parking brake lever minor adjustment procedure.
9. Reinstall the rear console cover and mat.
