Squeal or Whine From the Drive Belt

SYMPTOM

The engine drive belt squeals or whines.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The power steering pump pulley grooves were improperly machined.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Replace the power steering pump pulley.

Out of warranty:
Any repair performed after warranty expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone Office. You must request consideration, and get a decision, before starting work.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Unclip the power steering pump reservoir from its bracket, and move it to the side.





2. Move the auto-tensioner pulley wheel with a wrench to relieve the drive belt tension.

3. Slip the drive belt off of the power steering pump pulley.





4. Using the special tool, remove the pulley nut and the pulley.





5. Install a new power steering pump pulley, then loosely install the pulley nut.

6. Hold the pulley with the special tool, and torque the pulley nut to 64 N.m (47 lb-ft).

7. Move the auto-tensioner with a wrench, and install the drive belt.

8. Clip the power steering pump reservoir onto the holder bracket.

9. Start the engine, and confirm that the squeal or whine is gone.
