Simultaneously Deploying Airbags and Seat Belt Tensioners

Before scrapping any airbags or side airbags or seat belt tensioners (including those in a whole vehicle to be scrapped), the airbags or side airbags must be deployed and the seat belt tensioners must be triggered. If the vehicle is still within the warranty period, before deploying the airbags or side airbags or triggering the seat belt tensioners, the Acura Parts and Service Manager must give approval and/or special instruction. Only after the airbags or side airbags have been deployed or a seat belt tensioner is triggered (as the result of vehicle collision, for example), can they be scrapped.
If the airbags or side airbags or the seat belt tensioners appear intact (not deployed or triggered), treat them with extreme caution. Follow the procedure.

NOTE: If an SRS vehicle is to be entirely scrapped, its airbags or side airbag should be deployed while still in the vehicle. The airbags or side airbag should not be considered as salvageable parts and should never be installed in another vehicle.

WARNING: Confirm that each airbag or side airbag is securely mounted; otherwise, severe personal injury could result from deployment

1. Disconnect both the negative cable and positive cable from the battery.
2. Confirm that the special tool is functioning properly by following the check procedure on the tool label or the procedure.
3. Disconnect the negative cable and positive cable from the battery.
4. Confirm that the special tool is functioning properly by following the check procedure on the tool label or the procedure.

5. Disconnect the SRS main harness 18P connector and the SRS floor harness 18P connector from the SRS unit.
6. Cut seven wires at the SRS main harness 18P connector, and seven wires at the SRS floor harness 18P connector, as shown. Strip the ends of the wires, then twist each of seven wires together into two bunches.
7. Connect the alligator clips of the deployment tool to the two bunches of twisted wires.

8. Buckle the seat belt, then pull out about 2 inches of slack, make a loop with it, and hold the loop in place with a clip as shown.
9. Repeat step 8 on the other front belt.
10. Connect a 12 volt battery to the tool:
- If the green light on the tool comes on, an igniter circuit is defective. Go to Damaged Airbag, Side Airbag or Seat Belt Tensioner Special Procedure.
- If the red light on the tool comes on, the system is ready.

11. Push the tool's deployment switch. The airbags and side airbags should deploy (deployment is both highly audible and visible - a loud noise and rapid inflation of the bags, followed by slow deflation). The seat belt tensioners should take up the slack (pop the clips off the belts), and lock the belts in retracted positions.
- If the airbags and side airbags are deployed, the tensioners are triggered, and the green light on the tool comes on, continue with this procedure.
- If an airbag or a side airbag doesn't deploy or a tensioner isn't triggered, yet the green light comes on, an igniter is defective. Go to Damaged Airbag or Pretensioner Special Procedure.

WARNING: During airbag deployment and pretensioner activation the airbag and tensioner assemblies can become hot enough to burn you. Wait 30 minutes after activation before touching them.

12. Dispose of all the airbags and tensioners completely. No part of them can be reused.
